Giving

As a school that is “small by design,” the unique and transformative experience Montserrat offers is built around one idea: a supportive creative community. In supporting Montserrat, you become a part of our community and provide our students the courage needed to reimagine, to experiment, to discover, and to express the unique points of view a Montserrat education will unfold.  Your gifts provide the opportunity that ultimately fuels our students’ creativity and serves as the inspiration for the next generation of creative talent.

Scholarship

Support The Next Generation Of Creative Leaders

At Montserrat, a gift to support scholarship is more than providing financial aid support for our students. It breaks down the barriers that stifle creativity. It encourages our students to challenge themselves and take risks. It allows them to grow their artistic potential and aspire to more. In giving to scholarships, you provide our students the courage needed to reimagine, to experiment, to discover, and to express the unique point of view hidden within them.

Where Potential Meets Opportunity

Our belief is that financial capabilities should not be a barrier for attaining a college education.  Scholarship support ensures that education is accessible for students of merit. With a high population of Pell-eligible students, your scholarship makes an even greater impact. Your gift supports the next generation of creative talent and ensures that this essential education is available to those who need it most.

Scholarship By The Numbers

  • Montserrat awards over $4.5 Million in Scholarship Each Year
  • Over 95% of Our Students Receive Some Form of Financial Aid
  • 40% Of Students Are Pell-Eligible with a household income less than $50,000
  • 1 in 2 of our students are first-generation college students

Leave Your Legacy With An Endowment Scholarship

Establishing an endowed scholarship is one of the most enduring and enterprising ways you can make a difference in the lives of both current and future generations at Montserrat College of Art. Read below to learn more about establishing an Endowment at Montserrat.

Endowment

Building A Legacy

Contributing to the endowment is one of the most enduring and enterprising ways you can make a difference in the lives of both current and future generations of students at Montserrat College of Art. Endowment gifts support the mission of the college by providing a sustainable and predictable source of funds and strengthening the college’s long-term financial stability. Gifts to an Endowed Fund sustain our students, faculty, programs, and campus for years to come. The principal continues to grow, extending the impact of your support into the future.

How Do Endowed Funds Work?

By contributing to Montserrat’s Endowment, you create a legacy or honor a loved one while supporting the people and programs at Montserrat in perpetuity. Rather than used for immediate needs, endowed funds are invested with the objective of generating a stable source of funding for the college, now and in the future. Annual income produced by these funds is directed toward a purpose agreed upon by the donor and the college.

What Can Endowed Funds Support?

Endowed Funds can provide crucial support for a wide variety of purposes. Named endowment opportunities can support things like scholarships, faculty positions, and general operating needs. If you have something that you care deeply about and would like to support through the establishment of an endowed fund, we welcome a conversation with you about how best to direct your support to maximize the impact on the college.

Can I Establish A Named Endowment?

Donors who contribute a minimum of $25,000 can create a named fund.  The fund will exist in perpetuity to provide support for the college for generations to come. A minimum gift of $25,000 is required to establish an endowed scholarship fund and can be added to over time.

If you would like to discuss a named Endowment and area of support important to you, please contact Allison Rieke by email at [email protected] or by phone at (978) 921-4242 ext 1114

Can Endowment Gifts Be Made Over Time?

Yes, a named Endowment can be funded up to five years. Once you have an existing fund in place, you can always continue to add to the principal and help it grow over time through annual donations or by designating a Planned Gift from your estate to be added to the fund. There is no maximum level for an endowed fund, and anyone may add to the fund at any time including relatives, friends and associates who share your interests.

Dodge Family Scholarship Fund

The impact of Steve Dodge among the community of Montserrat College of Art is one that cannot be overstated. Steve’s legacy was one of a tireless leader who influenced the college in countless ways through his generosity and unmatched commitment.  His primary goal was to extend the reach of Montserrat to a broader community of students through access to education.

In honor of the leadership and vision Steve contributed to the college, Montserrat, along with the Dodge family, has instituted an endowed scholarship fund to celebrate his memory.  The Dodge Family Scholarship will provide significant annual support for students of merit. The endowed scholarship fund will exist in perpetuity to provide financial aid to qualifying students keeping Steve’s legacy a part of Montserrat for generations to come. The funds are invested with an annual yield providing tuition support.

As Steve so strongly understood, financial aid is an investment in talent and an opportunity to impact lives. At Montserrat, our mission is to provide an affordable, high quality education, which requires offering generous merit and need-based scholarships each year.  Many of our students are the first in their families to receive a college education and are only able to reach this achievement through the aid of scholarship support.  And while the majority of our students receive a level of financial assistance, the needs of our student population are far greater.

The Dodge Family Scholarship will enhance critical support provided for students now and in the future while honoring Steve’s legacy. Financial aid is more than a means to an education.  It can transform lives with immediate impact, enhancing Montserrat’s ability to ensure an education that provides needed strategies for developing sustainable creative practices in the workforce for qualified students.

This will be a living legacy and an initiative that was especially important to Steve. Montserrat is honored to recognize Steve’s impact through this fund and to carry on the support he and the Dodge family have shown for our Montserrat students.

The Jo Broderick Endowed Fund

Over the past three and a half decades of Montserrat’s history, it is difficult to think of anyone who dedicated themselves to this community quite like Jo Broderick.  Now in her retirement year, it is with tremendous gratitude that the college honors her work with the establishment of the Jo Broderick Endowed Fund.

Jo Broderick’s loyalty to the college has been truly unmatched, having served the institution since 1989 in various leadership roles, most recently as Montserrat’s Chief of Staff.

She helped usher the college through so many milestones, from new presidents, new buildings, and even our move to our downtown campus. Jo was there for it all, working tirelessly behind the scenes with an infectious determination and enthusiasm.

Hard-working doesn’t begin to describe the commitment Jo brought to her role. She gave her all to help build Montserrat into the institution it is today, with an unwavering belief in supporting the next generation of art and design.

A North Shore native, she understood the importance of Montserrat to this city, and her tenacity, kindness, and spirit made her an ideal representative for the college within the greater community. For over 36 years, to know Montserrat was to know Jo, and the institution has been made so much richer through her hard work and friendship.

The Jo Broderick Endowed Fund will exist in perpetuity, ensuring Jo’s impact will continue to be a part of Montserrat’s history for years to come. In addition, Montserrat is pleased to say that all gifts to the fund will be matched up to $50,000 through the college’s recently awarded Title III grant, which means your support will go even further to pay tribute to Jo’s impact. We welcome all those close to Jo to honor her time at the college with a gift to her fund.

Planned Giving

Leaving Your Legacy at Montserrat College of Art

Since 1970, philanthropic support has been vital to Montserrat College of Art’s growth and success. Some of the college’s most meaningful contributions have been received through thoughtfully structured gifts, often referred to as planned gifts.

Planned gifts are your opportunity to contribute to Montserrat’s exciting future while optimizing your personal financial health and tax planning.

No matter your capacity to give, you can make a lasting difference for our community.

What is Planned Giving?

Planned giving refers to arranging a future charitable gift to Montserrat College of Art through financial or estate plans such as wills, trusts, or designated assets.

Common Types of Planned Gifts

A planned gift can take the form of bequests, donations of life insurance proceeds, intellectual property, charitable remainder trusts, structured gift annuities, or gifts of assets like property or stock. They can be designated to a specific program or service you feel passionate about, used to set up a new endowment, support student scholarship, or provide unrestricted aid to the college.

Why Establish a Planned Gift?

It is testimony to your commitment to Montserrat’s mission and allows you to leave a legacy that will benefit the creative leaders of tomorrow. Your planned gift could be the solution to the financial challenges many of our students face, it could help us build new buildings, and, in some cases, it can also provide tax advantages or a reliable income stream to you, your spouse or your family during their lifetime.

Benefits for the Donor:

  • Tax Deductions
  • Supporting your passions for years to come
  • Cementing a philanthropic legacy at Montserrat College of Art

Are There Tax Benefits?

Yes. Including a charitable planned gift in your financial or estate plan affords you significant tax benefits and may increase the inheritance you leave to your heirs. Montserrat College of Art does not provide legal or tax advice, so we encourage you to consult with your financial or tax advisors to find the arrangement that is right for your personal and philanthropic objectives.
