AGENTS OF CHANGE: Art as Activism

Montserrat Galleries would like to invite you to participate in the 2012 academic symposium AGENTS OF CHANGE: Art as Activism. A two day academic symposium on art and activism with 30 Speakers, 8 sessions and 4 workshops.

 

10/26 Keynote: Guerrilla Girls, 8 pm $25
10/26 Symposium 9 am – 6 pm $50

Art has long been a vehicle of protest and an agent for social change. Montserrat College of Art welcomes the Guerrilla Girls and other artists, scholars and activists to approach the topic of Art & Activism as it relates to art history, studio art and contemporary social and political issues and within artistic practice. Topics include culturejammers, community arts, the occupy movement, feminism, gay politics, aids, human rights, environmentalist art, radical performance art and more!

YOUR CULTURAL CONSCIENCE: Guerrilla Girls Workshop
9 am – 12 pm, $150
Guerrilla Girls Frida Kahlo and Kathe Kollwitz will help participants produce their own activist projects on issues that are important to them.TAKE BACK YOUR CULTURE: Appropriation and Activism
Session 1: 10 am – 12 pm  $100
Session 2: 1:30 – 4:30 pm
Public Screening: 5 pm
A workshop that teaches and encourages artists and activists to creatively re-purpose and reclaim popular culture and mass media.

ACTIVISM THROUGH ACTIVATION: Environmental Embodiment
1:30 – 4:30 pm  $100
Instructor: Sandrine Schaeffer
Participants will engage in foundational movements that the human body uses to navigate its environment (crawling, walking, jumping, etc.) by asking how the body’s movements can be used as a form of communication.

VOICE OF THE VISUAL: Contemporary Issues in Art and Society
Session 1: 10 am – 12 pm Lecture + Film screening $100
Session 2: 1:30 – 4:30 pm Studio Component
Instructor: Susan Catandella ’02
Participants will look at artwork through the ages, the focus being contemporary issues. This workshop will have a studio component participants should bring materials of their choice.
