Judy Brown
Professor
“I love teaching the introductory drawing class. However students see or describe themselves as they enter (as designers, photographers, illustrators, fine artists, animators or ???) they embrace drawing as a way to investigate, compose, translate, and transform the world around them, to use their practice as a way to think through their ideas. ”Brown teaches freshman and upper-level courses in the Foundation and Painting Departments at Montserrat College of Art. She founded Montserrat’s Summer Intensive Studio Program in Viterbo, Italy. She’s returned to teach most years in July and occasionally directs the program. Currently represented by the Kingston Gallery in Boston (since 2005), other home bases include The Arden Gallery in Boston, The Hopkins Gallery in Wellfleet, and the Gimbel Gallery of Contemporary Art in NYC. Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions at the Danforth Museum (Framingham, MA) the Art Complex Museum (Duxbury, MA), Soho20 (NYC), Cerulean Gallery (Philadelphia, PA), HallSpace in Boston, MA, and venues in Viterbo and Trieste, Italy.
In recent years, artist books are part of her studio practice. Dreams Within speaks to narratives we construct in response to traumatic events from childhood or beyond. Like the disparate elements coordinated in paintings or as we sleep, Dreams Within offers departure points to question, revisit, or reprocess experience. This little book – where fragments of images combine with the partial vision and understanding of personal history – was designed to accompany the exhibition of the same name at Kingston Gallery’s Project Space from November 2nd–30th 2018; and ‘Among Friends’, a larger exhibition in the main and center galleries installed from November 1st–26th, 2017 in the Kingston Gallery; Smallish, poetry and small paintings accompanied her exhibition there in 2016.
Her work has been reviewed and featured in articles in The Boston Globe, Boston Magazine, Art New England, ArtScope, Cape Cod Voice, Delicious Line, Boston Traveler, Il Messagero Viterbo, and Trieste’s Il Piccolo. Brassard Brown’s work is included in corporate and private collections in the United States and abroad.
