Alum Jameel Radcliffe (’17) Profiled in Makers Series

October 8, 2024

Montserrat alum Jameel Radcliffe (’17) was recently featured on WBUR’s “The Makers.” The annual series profiles artists of color who are making their mark on Massachusetts. Last year, Montserrat alumni Michael Aghahowa (‘16) and Nygel Jones (’15)  were both featured.

This year journalist Cristela Guerra interviewed Radcliffe while he was teaching at Artists for Humanity, a program for Boston-area teens that “provides a safe and supportive environment where teens are employed to explore their voice and forge their unique path to success.” AFH offers employment to the teenagers, pairing them with a mentor to work “brand identities for businesses, bike racks for college campuses, and websites for local businesses.”

Radcliffe attending the program as a teen himself, and credits it with helping him create the portfolio that got him admitted to Montserrat in the first place.

“With this collection of work, he eventually got a full ride to Montserrat College of Art in Beverly. There, the emphasis was on technique, and he met other artists whose work he really admired. Artists who know Radcliffe say what stands out about him is his discipline. He spends hours honing, experimenting and evolving his style.”

Talking about his portrait subjects, Radcliffe said:

“I really want the people that I’m painting to be excited about it and to have things that they recognize and love,” he said. “As much as it is something I enjoy doing, it’s something that I hope that they can be proud of as well.”
