UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS + EVENTS
We welcome the community to our public programs, galleries and events.
Two talks are coming up around Sunday at the Nut House, now on view in the Montserrat Gallery through November 14.
Join us for a Curator Talk on the Life and Work of Maurice Sendak on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29, from 11am to 12pm in Room H101 at 23 Essex Street.
On FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30, from 3 to 4pm, there’s an Audio Description Virtual Tour on Zoom, with registration at the events link in our bio.
The exhibition looks back at a few years when Maurice Sendak took Sundays off from his studio to draw from the model with a small group of artists in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Painter and art historian Jonathan Weinberg pulled the group together, and he invited young local artist Marc McChesney, who brought along his best friend, illustrator Jamison Odone. Sendak’s German shepherd, Herman, showed up for moral support.
They met at a house nicknamed “the Nut House,” named for the squirrels that kept dropping acorns on the roof rather than for anyone inside.
The show brings together paintings, drawings and posters from those sessions, along with work the artists made before, during and after. It’s a look at what can happen when artists simply make time to sit down and draw together.
