Salary range: $85,000-$100,000 per year
Position Overview
Montserrat College of Art seeks a collaborative, service-oriented Director of Information Technology to lead the College’s technology operations in support of its academic mission. The Director is responsible for both delivering and overseeing exceptional customer service to students, faculty, and staff; ensuring reliable and secure technology infrastructure; and aligning IT resources with the needs of a creative, arts-focused learning environment.
As is common in small college environments, this role combines hands-on technical involvement with leadership responsibilities. The position supports desktop and campus IT services, oversees outsourced network and systems vendors, manages technology contracts and licensing, leads budget planning and oversight, and provides strategic direction for institution-wide technology initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service & Academic Support
- Serve as the primary advocate for technology needs across academic programs, ensuring that faculty, students, and staff receive responsive, high-quality IT support.
- Foster a culture of customer service excellence within the IT team and among external service partners.
- Partner with academic leadership to anticipate and support technology needs in studios, classrooms, labs, and digital learning environments.
- Develop and implement user training, documentation, and communication strategies to improve technology adoption and confidence.
Technology Operations & Leadership
- Provide day-to-day oversight of the IT department, including helpdesk/desktop support services and coordination with outsourced network and backbone providers.
- Supervise and mentor IT student workers, providing training, guidance and professional development opportunities that support their academic and career growth.
- Ensure reliable operation of campus hardware, software, classroom technology, digital resources, and IT service platforms.
- Maintain a stable, secure, and scalable technology environment through proactive planning, monitoring, and systems management.
- Develop and enforce IT policies, procedures, and best practices for security, data integrity, and accessibility.
Vendor, Contract, & License Management
- Manage relationships with third-party service providers, including network infrastructure contractors, cloud service vendors, and software partners.
- Oversee procurement, inventory, lifecycle planning, and license compliance for software, hardware, and digital tools.
- Negotiate contracts and ensure that service-level expectations meet campus needs.
Budget & Strategic Planning
- Develop and manage the annual IT budget, including forecasting, cost control, and strategic investment planning.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and make recommendations that enhance the College’s mission, student experience, and operational efficiency.
- Contribute to institutional planning and accreditation processes related to technology infrastructure and support services.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; Equivalent experience considered.
- Minimum of 5–7 years of progressively responsible IT experience, including management responsibility.
- Demonstrated commitment to customer service and the ability to support a creative and academically focused environment.
- Experience supervising desktop support teams supporting both Mac and PC environments and coordinating work with outsourced network/system providers.
- Strong knowledge of endpoint management, cloud and server systems, networking fundamentals, security best practices, and asset management.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Experience in higher education or an arts-focused environment is highly desirable.
Work Environment
This position is hands-on and campus-based, requiring regular interaction with faculty, students, and staff, and occasional evening or weekend support for key academic or institutional events.
