Thinking of Transferring? Your Smooth Transition to Montserrat
A Fresh Start: Making the Transfer to Montserrat Easy
You’ve already experienced college life, but perhaps you’ve realized your current path isn’t giving you the focused, hands-on artistic training you need. If you are looking to transfer into a dedicated BFA program, we welcome your experience and your renewed focus.
We have a clear process designed to ensure you get maximum credit for your previous work and land seamlessly in the right year of study.
How Transferring Works at Montserrat
- Initial Assessment: We review transcripts from all previous institutions (community college, university, or other art schools). Our Admissions team works closely with the Registrar to assess how your previous academic (Liberal Arts) and studio credits align with our BFA requirements.
- The Portfolio Review: Just like a first-time applicant, your portfolio is essential. It helps us determine your current skill level in foundational areas like drawing, design, and color theory, and ensures you are placed in the appropriate studio level.
- Maximum Credit Acceptance: We strive to accept as many relevant credits as possible. Many transfer students are able to enroll as second-year students, but some advanced students may enter as a mid-year second or even third-year student, depending on their portfolio and previous coursework.
Our Best Advice for Transfer Applicants
- Focus on Studio Work: Gather all your existing studio syllabi and samples of your work from those classes. This makes the credit-transfer evaluation process much smoother.
- Don’t Stress About Liberal Arts: Most general education credits (English, History, Science) transfer easily, provided you earned a passing grade.
- Talk to Us Early: The earlier you connect with our Admissions team, the more guidance we can provide on what courses to complete at your current institution to prepare for Montserrat.
Transferring is a common and positive step for many students who realize their true passion lies in a focused art environment. We’re ready to help you finish your degree and begin your creative future.
