Montserrat Convocation 2021

Leslie King HammondOn September 1st, the college came together for Academic Convocation to officially kick off this new academic year. 2021’s Academic Convocation was held in person and masked at The Cabot theater in Beverly. The event included remarks from President Kurt Steinberg, Dean Brian Pellinen and Dr. Leslie King Hammond, who also spoke at the Class of 2021’s Commencement Ceremony this spring.

Dr. Leslie King Hammond is the founder of the Maryland Institute College of Art Center for Race and Culture, as well as the Studio Museum of Harlem. She began teaching art history at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 1973 and in 1976, was appointed Dean of Graduate Studies. She is a practicing artist, creating mixed media fiber works and bricolage installations that explore the global anonymity of women’s work, domestic material culture, spirituality and African religious retention in the African Diaspora.
