The Artist’s Statement: Making Your College Essay Shine

While your portfolio shows us what you make, your personal statement (or essay) tells us why you make it. For an art college application, your essay is your chance to show the Admissions Team your personality, passion, and maturity.

Here are three key approaches to writing an effective art college essay:

1. Ditch the Resume Structure (Tell a Story, Not a List)

The biggest mistake students make is writing an essay that simply lists accomplishments already visible in their transcripts or portfolio.

• Instead: Focus on a single, compelling moment or challenge. Did you spend 40 hours perfecting a difficult digital painting? Did you work a summer job that unexpectedly fueled a new creative idea? Tell us the story behind the art.

2. Showcase Your Authentic Voice

We aren’t looking for flowery, overly formal language. We want to hear you.

• Focus on Motivation: Explain the driving force behind your need to create. Why is art your language? If you love Graphic Design, talk about a time you noticed how powerful a well-designed poster was. If you want to be an Illustrator, tell us about the character you simply had to bring to life.
• Connect Back to Montserrat: Briefly mention why the structure of a BFA at Montserrat, or perhaps our coastal location, the Creative Employment Initiative, or a specific concentration resonates with your goals.

3. Proofread, But Don’t Over-Edit

A clean, clear essay is important, but don’t edit the life out of your writing.

• Get a Second Opinion: Have a trusted teacher or counselor read your essay for clarity, grammar, and tone. Do they hear your voice coming through the words?
