Niigata, Japan

Montserrat’s program in Niigata, Japan is a four-week intensive comprised of two courses (one liberal arts course and one studio course (selected from two options)), demonstrations and workshops in traditional Japanese art forms, and travel to traditional and popular cultural sites. The program is based at Niigata College of Art & Design, on the coast of Japan’s Niigata prefecture. The trip includes visits to Japanese shrines, temples, and gardens, as well as to museums dedicated to Japanese art, Manga, and Anime. Students enrolled in the program take two classes for a total of 6 studio credits. Classes meet Monday – Friday, with some excursions to cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara.

Program cost: $7,000*

Steps to Apply

  • Complete and submit application along with non-refundable application fee of $100 (due December 20, 2024)
  • Request 2 academic references (due December 20, 2024) Notification of acceptance will be sent by January 20, 2025

After Acceptance

  • Passport form and payment of $1,200* by January 27, 2025. You MUST submit proof of a current passport with your deposit!
  • Payment of $2,850* due by February 24, 2025
  • Final Payment of $2,850* due by March 24, 2025
