“The rewards of teaching at Montserrat are many. Being in such a creative environment allows us to pause, slow down, consider many options. As a faculty member it is my aim to inspire, and to instruct, through meeting my students ‘where they are’. Challenging students from their individual points in time can provide for risk taking and subsequent growth as artists. Playing a role in this positive development is fantastic!”
Diane Ayott is a painter and a professor at Montserrat where she teaches in both the Drawing and Painting, and Foundation Departments. She holds two graduate degrees: an MFA in painting and an MS in art education, both from Massachusetts College of Art. Ayott is represented by Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in NYC. Her last solo exhibit, Jeepers Creepers, at Markel’s NYC Gallery was in the spring of 2015.
Kathryn Markel wrote: “Ayott’s lines and marks come into focus as we near and the penmanship takes on a precision. But Ayott’s precision avoids rigidity and is often a loosely applied geometry as evidenced in her method of patterning. There is a sense that the work is both a study and a doodle, serious and curious; a habit that enjoys fleshing out the meaning by writing it out over and over again. As viewers we read the results, the surface, the play of line, color and the again and again.”
Other exhibition venues for Ayott’s work include: Trident Gallery, Gloucester, MA; the Art Museum at the University of NH, Durham; Warm Springs Gallery, VA; Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, Bridgehampton; the Art Bank Gallery at the State Department, Washington, DC; OK Harris Gallery, NYC; the Washington Square Galleries, NYU, NYC; the Danforth Museum, Framingham, MA; the Fitchburg Art Museum, Fitchburg, MA; New England BioLabs, Ipswich, MA; Gordon College, Wenham, MA; HallSpace Gallery, Boston; Wheelock College, Boston; Pine Manor College, Chestnut Hill, MA; Woman Made Gallery, Chicago; Lydon Contemporary, Chicago; the University of Southern NH; New England College, Henniker, NH; the Art Complex Museum, Duxbury, MA; the Jane Deering Gallery, Annisquam, MA and the McCoy Gallery at Merrimack College in North Andover, MA. Her paintings and works on paper are represented in many contemporary art collections, both private and public.
