Communications Internship – Spring 2025

The Communications team (Creative, Database Marketing, Marketing and Public Relations) at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), promotes the MFA’s collection, exhibitions and programs through outreach to local, national and international press, print and digital advertising, management of social media channels with over 1.3 million followers, and email marketing.

The team is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented intern with strong writing skills and an interest in pursuing a career in communications. Reporting to the Marketing and Communications Officer and through mentorship from a team of experienced professionals and experience in a fast-paced environment, the intern will become integrated into the daily operations of the Marketing and Communications team, gaining valuable practical skills and workplace experience. The student will gain valuable practical skills for a future career in communications. They will also have opportunities to grow their professional networks through interactions with colleagues and interns from departments across the Museum.

The ideal candidate must commit to working onsite up to 20 hours a week, (within Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm parameters), from Jan 24 through April 25, 2025, including attendance at the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course from 12:30-2:30pm on the following Fridays: Jan 31; Feb 7; Feb 14; Feb 21; Feb 28; Apr 4; Apr 11; and Apr 18. 

The intern will be paid at a rate of $16.80 per hour and will receive a $90 per month transportation subsidy. (*The subsidy is subject to taxes.)

Essential Responsibilities

  • Brainstorm and create original content for the MFA’s social media channels, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, and Threads
  • Assist in coordinating influencer outreach
  • Assist in pre-planning of exhibition marketing by researching data, background and images to help build marketing plans/briefs
  • Learn project management tools to initiate social media posts, promotional emails, and marketing campaigns
  • Assist with on-site events such as press previews, marketing events, and photo/video shoots
  • Serve as off-site point of contact and facilitator for 8-12 community events where the MFA will require a brand presence. Will require work outside of the 9am-5pm museum schedule.
  • Organize inventory of merch and prepare packages for events, partners, and journalists.
  • Pull advertising samples for proofing and archiving
  • Assist in preparing wrap-up reports for internal and external stakeholders
  • Brainstorm new marketing and tourism partnerships
  • Attend events and conferences with staff members to promote tourism initiatives and upcoming exhibitions
  • Assist with promotion of MFA events through event listings and track performance
  • *Prepare and offer a 3–5-minute final synoptic presentation of the internship as part of the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in an undergraduate degree program concurrent with the internship period. Preference will be given to rising juniors and seniors (class of 2026 or 2025)
  • Strong interest in art and the museum industry
  • Excellent writing, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of social media platforms including Instagram and TikTok and interest in staying on top of trending topics and platform updates
  • Proven ability to work efficiently as part of a team and independently
  • Keen attention to detail and ability to multitask
  • Confidence to take initiative and pitch new ideas and content
  • Ability to commit to work onsite up to 20 hours per week (within Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm parameters), from Jan 24 through Apr 25, 2025, including attendance at the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course from 12:30-2:30pm on the following Fridays: Jan 31; Feb 7; Feb 14; Feb 21; Feb 28; Apr 4; Apr 11; Apr 18; and Apr 25.  
  • Ability to attend orientation on Fri, Jan 24, 2025, 10am to 3:30pm.
