Clay Studio Summer Internship

Website The Handle Factory
The Handle Factory is a community clay studio in Shelburne Falls, MA. The studio is welcoming and spacious.
Summer internship is an opportunity for students to learn and work in nearly all of the aspects of running an independent or community ceramics studio as well as get experience in teaching clay to children, while having access to a fully equipped clay studio to develop their own skills.
We prefer those who have demonstrated an interest in working in clay through coursework, hobbies or employment, or are interested in arts education. We may consider others who are interested in the position who come highly recommended.
Training is provided to complete any expected tasks. Responsibilities may include loading/unloading a kiln, making and testing glazes, pugging/ wedging recycled clay, maintaining kiln equipment and wheels, assisting visiting artists, marketing, and a lot of cleaning, among other things. Interns also have the opportunity to assist with teaching children’s classes.
This is an unpaid internship, so Praxis recipients are encouraged. Interns get a full membership to the studio including clay and glazes, and may join a summer class series free of charge. The minimum time commitment is 6 hours per week. The interns work closely with the studio manager and are afforded plenty of time and mentorship to develop their own work. In addition, we now have a wood kiln which we will be firing monthly, which the interns may participate in.
