SUMMARY:Sunday at the Nut House
DESCRIPTION:Curator Talk on the Life and Work of Maurice Sendak:\nThursday\, October 29\, 11-12pm\, 23 Essex St. Room H101\nRegister here for the Audio Description Virtual Tour on Friday\, October 30\, 3-4pm\n \nRead the full brochure \nSunday at the Nut House celebrates a brief period in the development of three artists who came together with the renowned artist Maurice Sendak on Sundays in Ridgefield\, Connecticut\, in 2004-7 to draw from the model. They were brought together by Sendak\, who wanted an occasional break from working long hours in his studio on such projects as the illustrations and sets for the opera Brundibar. He gave Jonathan Weinberg the task of forming the drawing group. \nAt the time\, Weinberg\, who is both a painter and an art historian\, and his husband\, Nick Boshnack\, lived next door to Sendak in a house Sendak owned. This house\, where these first drawing sessions took place\, was affectionately known as “the Nut House\,” not because of the mental capacity of its inhabitants\, but because squirrels frequently dropped acorns on its roof. Weinberg invited Marc McChesney\, a young local artist whom he had briefly mentored\, to join the group. Marc\, in turn\, suggested that his best friend\, the illustrator Jamison Odone\, come to draw with them as well. The quartet was augmented by Herman\, Maurice Sendak’s enormous and beautiful German shepherd\, who provided emotional support. \nThe paintings\, drawings\, and posters in the exhibition provide a sense not only of what the work of the drawing sessions was like\, but also an introduction to the art the four artists made in the years before\, during\, and after the Nut House days. \nSunday at the Nut House was originally conceived and organized by participating artists Jonathan Weinberg and Jamison Odone in 2025 for the Stephanie Ann Roper Gallery at Frostburg State University. The exhibition’s iteration for the Montserrat Galleries is organized in collaboration with Lynne Cooney\, Director of Exhibitions and Galleries. \nImage: Jonathan Weinberg\, Maurice Sendak Drawing\, 2007. SUMMARY:Masako Kamiya: Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: September 30\, 11am\, Library\nFaculty in Conversation artist talk: October 21\, 11am\, H101\nWatch the Artist Talk with Masako here. \n“Outside my studio\, I am often a spectator and a passive participant in endless flickering images on a digital screen. My eyes are infiltrated with intense short-wavelength blue light. Therefore\, facing a painting on paper in the studio\, I suddenly crave the paint’s color\, opacity\, weight\, and a sense of reciprocity. On the grid linear mesh\, I laboriously map my marks\, and they remind me of my hand movement and their touch on the surface.   \nThe diminutive paint marks can tirelessly repeat as they signify countless cells and fibers that make up my body. Each painting is a vessel that carries a sense of weight\, gravity\, and balance\, which reflects my complex sensory experience.” \nImages: Photographed by Will Howcroft. Courtesy of Gallery NAGA

SUMMARY:Andrew Mowbray: New Heraldic Ordinaries
DESCRIPTION:Reception: Saturday\, October 17\, 3-5pm \nArtist Talk: Wednesday\, November 4\, 11-12pm \nThe interdisciplinary artist Andrew Mowbray uses ubiquitous and humble objects and materials to create complex two-and three-dimensional artworks that allude to history or past paradigms of domesticity.  Since 2006\, Mowbray has used commercially available Tyvek as a primary material to create intricately sewn artworks reminiscent of quilts and samplers. Mowbray imaginatively disguises Tyvek’s standard graphics and limited pallet of white\, blue\, orange\, and red to create an infinite array of compositions and patterns that play with dichotomies of the hand-made and industrially produced\, fine art and craft\, and feminine and masculine. \nIn New Heraldic Ordinaries\, Mowbray presents a series of personal crests\, or ordinaries\, fabricated from Tyvek. Dating from Medieval Europe\, heraldic ordinaries designate a system of hereditary symbols\, such as geometric shapes\, typically displayed on shields or coats of arms\, that were used to identify families\, institutions\, or nations. Finding aesthetic affinities with the geometric repetition of heraldic ordinaries\, which are still seen today\, Mowbray imagines his own family of ordinaries. Establishing a repeated “frame\,” each ordinary then contains a unique configuration of shapes\, forms\, and symbols. While historically associated with nobility or the upper classes\, Mowbray democratizes such identifications with the elite by rendering the name plate on each ordinary blank\, allowing anyone to claim their own lineage. And in contrast to the material hardness of classic shields or coats of arms\, Mowbray’s ordinaries project softness and whimsy\, democratizing ideas of class and economic distinctions. \nRaised in Duxbury and residing in Dorchester. MA\, Mowbray received his BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. His project-based work has been exhibited extensively\, nationally and internationally and is held in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, The DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum\, Wellington Management\, Fidelity Investments and numerous other private collections. Mowbray’s work has been reviewed in Art in America and featured in Sculpture Magazine. He has received grants from The Massachusetts Cultural Council\, The LEF Foundation and the Artists Resource Trust. Andrew is currently Associate Teaching Professor in Art and Director of 3D Arts at Wellesley College. \nimage:\nAndrew Mowbray\nUnnamed Crests 1-10\, 2026\,\nTyvek Home Wrap\, thread\n37 x 31 in.\nPhoto credit: Julia Featheringill

SUMMARY:Jamison Cloud: the excavation\, and a return
DESCRIPTION:Jamison Cloud works at the intersections of print\, paper\, and installation as a reflection of the artist’s navigation across spaces\, cultures\, and histories. Cloud uses handmade paper to create two and three-dimensional artworks that explore connections to identity and home. In his installation for the 301 Frame Gallery\, handmade paper becomes a container for questions of selfhood\, cultural heritage\, and belonging\, holding the traces of both personal experience and the environments that shape it.
