SUMMARY:Dreamland: Lagoon to Foredune
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Earth Day with Anna Clem and learn about the Dreamland: Lagoon to Foredune artist book project currently on display in the library. \nArtist Statement: Dreamland began with years of observing the Basin Head sand dune system at the edge of the Northumberland Strait in Canada. My mother and I called this place “Dreamland” many years before we commenced this collaborative project: The dunes are other-worldly with many personalities\, partially generated by the weather or time of day\, but also dependent upon the visitor. \nLagoon to Foredune is a set of six one-of-a-kind cyanotype books made in Dreamland. On six separate outings\, I walked across the heathland\, stopping to place an open book in branches and under brush\, turning to a new page each time\, until all pages were exposed. This process allowed the sun\, wind\, and other elements to interact with the light-sensitive paper without further mediation from me. Back on the beach\, I plunged the book into the waves\, resulting in its development. Each soft cover was printed with a photograph made in Dreamland\, and the books were toned with different botanicals that can be found there\, resulting in colors varying from cyanotype’s usual Prussian blue.

SUMMARY:Throughline: The Fiber Art of Mary Balzer Buskirk
DESCRIPTION:Mary Balzer Buskirk (1931-2009) combined a commitment to weaving as an art form with an intense investigation of techniques specific to the medium. Early patterns for rugs set the stage for wall hangings that demonstrate varying degrees of transparency\, along with tubular works that establish a sculptural presence. Buskirk began her engagement with textiles as a graduate student at Cranbrook in the mid-1950s. Following a move to California in 1960\, Buskirk’s initial attraction to the inherent abstraction of the grid of vertical and horizontal fiber opened onto more sinuous compositions inspired by natural forms. Textiles in the exhibition also showcase Buskirk’s interest in off-loom techniques\, along with her willingness\, as her career progressed\, to harken back to prior training in painting by mounting woven compositions on stretcher bars. \nUntitled (long hanging with circles)\, 1959\, 82” x 18”\, woolCourtesy of Martha Buskirk\nGallery talk with Prof. Martha Buskirk\, Ph.D. daughter of the artist\, Nov. 6 at 5pm followed by a reception at 6pm. SUMMARY:Faculty Conversation with Ethan Berry
DESCRIPTION:Berry’s new installation in the Bare Gallery\, entitled “Sometimes\,” is a partial response to W. B. Sebald’s book “A Natural History of Destruction” and is a reflection of the writer’s experience reading and viewing the German national response to the devastation of cities and culture during World War II. His observations on the literature from this time reveal a pattern of displacement and erasure of the reality of the destruction. Berry’s project includes images and projections created during his recent sabbatical. Also included are texts that reference\, or are reactive to this state of upheaval and transformation which provide the potential for interpretation in visual form. \nRead Ethan’s bio here.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Hong Hong
DESCRIPTION:Artist talk with Beverly-based visual artist\, \nHong Hong\nWednesday\, February 28th\, 2:50pm\nUnderground\n\nEach summer and fall\, Hong Hong (b. 1989\, Hefei\, Anhui\, China) travels to faraway and distinct locations to make paper. The environmental\, site-specific investigations map relationships between landscape\, time\, and the body through cartographic\, symbolic\, and material languages. During the winter and spring\, she forms paintings directly on the floor of her studio. These schematics combine intergenerational story-telling\, collaborative texts\, and image-making to document states of interiority and subjectivity.\n248 Cabot Street\, The Underground (basement level)

SUMMARY:Faculty in Conversation: Martha Buskirk
DESCRIPTION:Art historian Martha Buskirk will discuss growing up surrounded by the work of her mother\, fiber artist Mary Balzer Buskirk\, as well as the ongoing process of responding to her legacy. After taking up weaving during graduate studies at Cranbrook\, Mary Balzer Buskirk maintained an active studio and exhibition practice integrated into the rhythms of family life via a studio adjacent to the living room. Martha wrote the catalog essay for a 2001 retrospective of her mother’s textile work at the Monterey Museum of Art\, and since then she has been engaged in various efforts to find appropriate homes for pieces that remained in the family collection. As part of the talk\, Martha will bring in examples of her mother’s work. \nHardie Room 101\, 23 Essex Street\, Beverly \n\n
