DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk: Wednesday\, Sept. 23\, 11-12PM H101 (23 Essex Street)\nClosing Reception: Sat.\, Oct. 3rd\, 12-2PM (301 Cabot Street)\n  \n“War-birds & adverts dance across my screen – like the birds of paradise. \nMechanical marvels of stolen avian secrets. Ailerons and fuselage. \nTheir hollow bones will be broken and poisoned by beasts created in their image.” \n                                                                                                            -Campbell McLean \n  \nCampbell McLean explores her queer-American experience by creating caricaturist paintings\, objects\, installations\, and videos. From oil on canvas\, papier-mâché to found object\, McLean’s unique aesthetic approach shines through in her sporadic ‘make-due’ energy that flows seamlessly between 2D and 3D forms. The resulting works are immersive and modular series and installations that read as both specific and universalizing\, personal and relatable. \n  \nIn War-Birds & Adverts\, the artist’s installation for the 301 Frame Gallery\, McLean incorporates themes of patriotism\, camp\, nostalgia\, and caricature as a generalized and vague criticism of the time and space we are living in now. Campbell’s use of humor and the appropriation of a thinly veiled spectacle\, seek to critique a multitude of cultural and contemporary concerns\, including\, isolation\, screen time\, self-commodification\, sloganeering\, sex\, death\, war\, ‘the art market’. As McLean comments\, “Can I really not talk about that terrible ‘thing’ at an institutional gallery?” How are the birds doing? Didn’t you hear?! It’s all for sale! Call my gallerist! 978 495 6697. \n  \nCampbell-Lynn McLean is a Boston-based artist and a 2022 graduate from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) BFA program. McLean is currently pursuing her MFA in painting at Boston University\, Class of 2027. She has received numerous awards and scholarships in recognition of her works\, including the Stephen D. Paine Scholarship in 2021\, the George Nick Award in 2022\, and the Joseph Ablow Memorial Prize in 2026. Since 2024\, she has presented a solo exhibition\, included in three group exhibitions\, and two art fairs with LaiSun Keane\, Boston\, MA. \n

SUMMARY:Reflections in the Long Night
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Talk: Friday\, Sept. 18\, 5-6PM\nReception: Friday\, Sept. 18\, 6-8PM\nAs part of the Montserrat Galleries Curatorial Mentorship program\, Reflections in the Long Night is a group exhibition organized by Curatorial Assistant Madeline McGann. The exhibition explores divergent queer realities and how the participating artists materialize the complexity of finding oneself within cultural heteronormativity and amidst the pressures of everyday life. This show proposes queerness as a driving force of empowerment through play\, revelation\, and dérive\, felt in flickers of warmth where time and space move differently. \nThe exhibition features Laicee Blackwell\, Tynan Byrne\, Ivy Howard\, Clare Tof Miryam\, Frankie Symonds\, Jake Wanamaker\, Henry Walls\, and Echo VanBenschoten.

SUMMARY:Four Voices in Silk
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: September 8\, 6–8pm.\nArtist Talk: September 11\, noon\, H101\nWearable Art Sale during both events. \nArtists: Allyson Christopher\, Christine Gauthier-Kelley\, Sue Niemi\, Leslie Pearlman \nFour Voices in Silk presents a vibrant and colorful array of hand-painted silk works by four expert silk artists of Ten Pound Studio\, Gloucester whose practices are rooted in the preservation and continuation of original silk-painting techniques. \nWorking directly on silk with traditional resist and dye methods\, these four artists bring distinct artistic voices to a richly expressive medium. Together\, these Ten Pound Studio artists form a unique collective in the United States dedicated to practicing and preserving the original serti steam-set techniques of hand-painted silk. Their work represents a rare repository of specialized knowledge\, craftsmanship\, and skill in original design and hand-painted silk techniques. \nThe exhibition reveals the remarkable versatility of silk as an art form\, featuring elegant wearable art\, wall displays\, decorative works\, and home décor. Each piece demonstrates the luminous color\, fluid movement\, intricate pattern\, and extraordinary depth that can emerge when dye and silk meet through the hands of a skilled artist. \nAt its heart\, Four Voices in Silk is a celebration of both tradition and individual expression. While the artists share a commitment to traditional technique\, each brings a distinctive visual language and creative perspective to the medium. The result is an exhibition that honors the history of silk painting while demonstrating its vitality as a contemporary art form. \nThe Exhibition will be on view at Montserrat College of Art from August 20 through September 24\, 2026.  The Opening Celebration and Sale of wearable arts will be held on September 8\, 6-8 pm. \nA Public Forum and Sale will take place on September 11\, offering visitors an opportunity to learn more about the artists\, their techniques\, and the importance of preserving this specialized art form. Student opportunities to explore silk painting firsthand will also be offered\, with classes and workshops to be announced. \nFour Voices in Silk invites audiences to experience the beauty of silk not simply as a material\, but as a living artistic tradition—where color\, craftsmanship\, technique\, and four individual voices come together.

SUMMARY:Sunday at the Nut House
DESCRIPTION:Reception + Gallery Talk: Sunday\, September 20\, 3-5PM \nSunday at the Nut House celebrates a brief period in the development of three artists who came together with the renowned artist Maurice Sendak on Sundays in Ridgefield\, Connecticut\, in 2004-7 to draw from the model. They were brought together by Sendak\, who wanted an occasional break from working long hours in his studio on such projects as the illustrations and sets for the opera Brundibar. He gave Jonathan Weinberg the task of forming the drawing group. \nAt the time\, Weinberg\, who is both a painter and an art historian\, and his husband\, Nick Boshnack\, lived next door to Sendak in a house Sendak owned. This house\, where these first drawing sessions took place\, was affectionately known as “the Nut House\,” not because of the mental capacity of its inhabitants\, but because squirrels frequently dropped acorns on its roof. Weinberg invited Marc McChesney\, a young local artist whom he had briefly mentored\, to join the group. Marc\, in turn\, suggested that his best friend\, the illustrator Jamison Odone\, come to draw with them as well. The quartet was augmented by Herman\, Maurice Sendak’s enormous and beautiful German shepherd\, who provided emotional support. \nThe paintings\, drawings\, and posters in the exhibition provide a sense not only of what the work of the drawing sessions was like\, but also an introduction to the art the four artists made in the years before\, during\, and after the Nut House days. \nSunday at the Nut House was originally conceived and organized by participating artists Jonathan Weinberg and Jamison Odone in 2025 for the Stephanie Ann Roper Gallery at Frostburg State University.
