Welcome President Kurt T. Steinberg

The Montserrat College of Art Board of Trustees has named Kurt T. Steinberg to serve
as president of the four-year art and design college beginning July 1. Steinberg comes to Montserrat following 12 years at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design (“Mass Art”), where he served as executive vice president and one year as acting president. 

Montserrat Trustees Chair Henrietta Gates said, “We are excited for the leadership that Kurt Steinberg will bring to Montserrat as we approach our 50^thanniversary in 2020. Kurt is the perfect choice to build on the success achieved under President Steve Immerman, who retired in June. Following a national search, we were fortunate to find Kurt so close by. His impressive experience, knowledge of the region, and dedication to the value of an art and design education will make a seamless transition at the college and what we know will be a successful presidency at Montserrat.”

Under Steinberg’s leadership, Mass Art welcomed the largest incoming class of students in its history in fall 2017, significantly increased institutional financial aid and grants to students over the past four years, resulting in a decrease in student debt, and forged corporate and collegiate partnerships that reduced costs and expanded student services. Steinberg also led a delegation to China to establish a five-year academic/recruitment partnership with the Beijing Royal School, and served as a member of a Fulbright Commission which visited multiple German universities. His strategic leadership of a 10-year plan to renovate the MassArt physical campus resulted in the transformation of the college’s academic and student life spaces.

An authority in collegiate operations, Steinberg has delivered guest lectures on higher education finance, urban planning, and the Massachusetts political process at Suffolk University, the University of Massachusetts Boston, and many professional higher education conferences. He is a visiting accreditor for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), and the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD).

Prior to joining MassArt, Steinberg was Associate Vice Chancellor/CFO at the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Syracuse University and a Master of Public Administration from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. He is currently completing his doctoral studies in Organizational Leadership (Ed.D.) at Northeastern University.

A resident of Framingham, Steinberg is a trustee of the Danforth Museum and School. He was an elected member of the Framingham town meeting, and chair of its finance committee Kurt is married to Sarah Steinberg, a graduate of the Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts and an artist-educator with the Wellesley Public Schools. The Steinbergs have two sons, one of whom attends Framingham High School, and the other University of Massachusetts Lowell.
