Montserrat Visits the PEM

April 22, 2013

Montserrat’s Figure Modeling class took a field trip to the Peabody Essex Museum recently.

Mimi Leveque, chief conservator, gave a backroom tour of the conservation process of a William Rush figurehead, as well as other artworks under repair or reconstruction. She discussed her background and some of the skills used/needed for the job. Leveque explained how knowing the story behind the object or artwork is necessary to be able to reconstruct missing elements or create the right effects with perhaps different materials than the ones originally used.
