Montserrat College of Art is proud to present Montserrat in Italia 2015, an exhibition highlighting student work created during Montserrat’s Viterbo, Italy study abroad program. This annual exhibition showcases a day in the life of students in the enchanting medieval town of Viterbo. July 2015 marked the second year at our new site, the Associazione di Rosa Venerini, and the seventeenth year of the program, a four-week adventure providing college students and artists a unique opportunity to live and study in a country famous for its artistic legacy. Once a major Etruscan site, the city of Viterbo is now a bustling, modern town with a lively university community and active art scene.
This year’s exhibition includes the work of twenty-five students from Montserrat, Rhode Island School of Design, Maryland Institute College of Art, and North Dakota State University. Students followed in the footsteps of countless artists and writers before them, exploring and marveling at the captivating landscape of Italy and its rich cultural heritage. Each student selected up to two works to contribute to Montserrat in Italia 2015. In addition to drawings, watercolors and oil paintings, several students’ sketchbooks are on view in the Carol Schlosberg Alumni Gallery. This exhibition is both a reminder and a reflection of their summer abroad, embracing foreign culture and revealing itself in a small body of work.
Dean Laura Tonelli, Program Director and faculty, invites the community to, “join vicariously as the students share their impressions of medieval stone balconies in San Pellegrino, fashionable strollers in Piazza Erbe, the bathers at the local hot springs, and the steep climb to the tufa town of Civita di Bagnoregio. Andiamo!”
