Mike Ryczek (’06) Exhibits Work at 13FOREST

January 28, 2020

Montserrat Alum Mike Ryczek (’06) has a new exhibition, Fascination Street, currently on view at the 13FOREST Gallery in Arlington, Mass. Fascination Street is Ryczek’s first solo Exhibition, and it introduces work that synthesizes his 2016 visit to Seoul, South Korea. Using a blend of realism and surrealism, he captures the overwhelming sensory nature of his trip to an unfamiliar country.

Ryczek’s trip was incited by his partner’s participation and inclusion in a gathering of Korean adoptees in Seoul. They had little knowledge of Korean culture prior to the trip, which inspired them to immerse themselves in the new culture of the country for the length of their stay. Photographs taken of the city and its residents formed basis of the work, which Ryczek then built upon surrealistically as he continued learning about Korean history. This Fascination Street exhibition concludes three years of study, imagining and revising by Ryczek.

The show opened on January 18th and will remain on display until March 13th.

Mike Ryczek will be holding a talk at 13FOREST entitled Souvenir – a conversation with Mike Ryczek on February 22nd, from 4 – 6 pm.
