Reception: August 5, 2 – 4p m
On View: August 4 -2 9

The August exhibits at the Marblehead Arts Association (MAA) highlights maritime art in conjunction with the Maritime Festival taking place from August 3-12th. The MAA exhibits run from August 4-29th with an opening reception on Sunday, August 5th from 2-4pm.

The MAA will feature exciting yachting race photography by award winning photographers, Craig Davis, Leighton O’Connor and Peter Morris. Maritime fine art offers the work of Racket Shreve, Charles Allen, Kathleen Staab, Phil Cusumano, Ron Harrison and Martha Quigley. Also being exhibited is a show of large format photography titled “At the Ocean’s Edge” by Fran Gardino.

The MAA is also pleased to present an exhibit of W. Starling Burgess. Born in 1878, Burgess was a yacht designer, aviation pioneer, and naval architect. In 1905 he established a yacht yard in Marblehead, Massachusetts and began designing and building yachts and boats. In 1908 he became interested in aviation and in 1910 he formed the Burgess Company and by 1915, with 800 employees was the largest employer in Marblehead. At some point in this decade, Burgess designed what was almost certainly his most popular boat, the 14-foot “Brutal Beast.” Simple enough for inexpensive mass-production, the Beasts became the dominant instructional craft of Marblehead—and other communities—into the forties.

During the Maritime Festival the MAA will be exhibiting a very special poster designed by Martha Quigley, which was inspired by a relatively unknown magazine illustration by Edward Hopper dating from 1924. Quigley created this piece to invoke a sense of history and nostalgia while celebrating our Maritime history. A limited edition of 100 16” x 20” signed and numbered fine art reproductions will be available for purchase at the MAA.
