Gallery News: Montserrat Professor Barbara Moody Exhibits this Summer in the Carol Schlosberg Gallery
Montserrat College of Art is pleased to present, Earth Bound a solo exhibition featuring Montserrat Professor Barbara Moody in the Carol Schlosberg Alumni Gallery. The exhibition features three of Moody’s recent large-scale drawings that depict the wildness of the natural landscape. Through exuberant mark-making and bold application of materials such as charcoal and paint, the artist creates a striking visual tension of simplicity and complexity. The public is invited to an Artist Reception Monday, June 15, 4 – 6 pm at 23 Essex St. Beverly, MA.
Moody refers to her process as that of an excavation site, as she “develops layers of line and color and idea, some images are buried and new ones emerge” and she “discovers meaning in the disparate clues.” Moody’s process of exploration is integral to her work and it is through openness to the unexpected that keeps her challenged and engaged. The three large-scale works featured in Earth Bound exemplify this very sentiment.
Moody’s work in Earth Bound struggles between organic and man-made forms and her landscapes cannot be tamed; they overcome human control and influence. “Tremor” (2014) is nearly 5 x 8 feet in size and features dense, tangled lines; the work combines acrylic squeegee and drip techniques with pastel and charcoal mark-making, resulting in a rich texture of representational and abstract elements. The piece exemplifies the artist’s range of skill and her unique drawing techniques.
Barbara Moody has had six solo exhibitions at Kingston Gallery in Boston over the past ten years. She recently completed two large-scale mural projects for a corporation in Fall River, MA, and completed a 27-foot wall drawing for Seven: A Performative Drawing Project at Montserrat in 2012. Her work has been included in exhibitions in California, New York, Minnesota, and Chicago, as well as the DeCordova Museum, Mills Gallery, and Albright Gallery in Massachusetts. Moody earned M.Ed. and Ed.D. degrees from Harvard University, as well as a BFA from Syracuse University. She is a Professor at Montserrat College of Art, where she also served as Dean for nine years. www.barbaramoody.com
