Gallery News: Artist Talk with Jon Kuzmich and Upcoming Exhibition Featuring Andrew Houle ’00

February 29, 2016

Jon Kuzmich
Visiting Artist Talk
Wednesday, March 2, 11:30 am
23 Essex Street, Room H201

Jon Kuzmich creates labor and process-intensive visual systems that involve the conceptually driven organization of small, synthetic units into large and complex patterns.

His work is often inspired by the fact that our perception as human beings is altered and distorted by our belief in systems that we create (religious, economic, scientific). Despite borrowing liberally from the cannon of Op-art, abstraction and conceptual art, Kuzmich considers his work to be representational, illustrating that what we see and what we know are questionable.

Kuzmich’s piece, “Portrait of the US as a Consumer” (2014) is currently on view in the Montserrat Gallery, as part of the group exhibition “I Will Go On…” through April 2, 2016.

Jon Kuzmich received a Bachelor of Architecture from Kansas State University (2001) and a MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute (2011). His work has appeared in many exhibitions in the Bay Area and nationally and has been published internationally. He has been a finalist for many notable Bay Area awards including the SECA award, SF MOMA (2011) and the Tournesol Award, Headlands Center for the Arts (2011, 2012). Jon Kuzmich lives and works in San Francisco.

Houle’s painting focus has been described as American Realism; capturing the surroundings north of Boston in an eclectic body of work highlighting blue-collar landmarks and iconic Cape Ann light. Recognizing influences from Hopper and Rockwell, Houle has worked towards creating a personal narrative through his paintings connecting the viewer to his or her community.

Houle currently splits his time as Creative Director at Tryptic Press, painting in his studio space at Porter Mills, Co-Chairing the Beverly Cultural Council, and as lead promoter of Beverly Comic Con.
