Montserrat Trustee and Headmaster at Brookwood School, John C. Peterman, Brookwood’s Visual Arts Dept. Coordinator, Kathy Stewart and eight junior high students from the Brookwood School immersed themselves into art during their visit to Montserrat on Wednesday, May 16.
The visit was part of Brookwood’s Upper School students, who forewent their regular classes this week and immersed themselves in one intensive, singularly focused course during Steep Week!
The name Steep Week grew out of the notion that sometimes, to understand a thing, a person has to immerse oneself in it and “steep,” just as a teabag steeps in hot water. And so Brookwood students were “steeped” in courses designed to “take down the walls” of the traditional classroom, provide for authentic (real-word) experiences, and simultaneously provide both scholarly and experiential learning.
Twelve courses – in fields from art to engineering, from writing to outdoor survival – were offered during the week and were all interdisciplinary in nature. The courses took the students beyond the boundaries of the Brookwood campus, some exploring the wonders of the North Shore while others venture to Boston and beyond.
