“I am grateful for the experience and wish that every artist could have the same sort of access to small business information that was made available through APT. I tell my friends that APT was like business school for artists.” – Testimonial from a Toolbox Participant

Montserrat College of Art and the Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston are offering The Artist’s Professional Toolbox (APT) certificate program again this year! It is a one-year professional development program located on Montserrat’s Beverly campus during the 2013-14 academic year. This two-semester program, which teaches artists the business skills for work in the creative economy, is now in its ninth year teaching practicing visual artists the skills and confidence they need to master the business challenges of being an artist. In addition, artists will be involved in critiques and artist-mentoring through this unique partnership with the college.

APT is a nine-month intensive course for a select group of artists to learn and practice marketing, networking, and business skills with the additional benefits of peer group interaction, mentorship and feedback lead by experienced Montserrat College of Art studio faculty. APT students will receive constructive feedback on their artwork and be taught the skills to critique their own and other’s work. The ability to judge and edits one’s own work is critical to the success of any artist’s portfolio. Discourse will go beyond formally deconstructing the work and offer practical solutions to encourage creative productivity.

“Montserrat College of Art is delighted to partner with the Arts & Business Council again this year, it is such a natural fit,” says Director of Montserrat Galleries, Leonie Bradbury. Bradbury was instrumental in originally bringing the program to campus last year. She states, “I feel the added studio critique component  provide students with the skills needed to not only present themselves professionally, but also provide the extra support and encouragement they need to bring their artwork to the next level.”

The program is now taking applications for a class of 30 by September 6, 2013. For more information visit montserrat.edu/artists-toolbox
