Alumnus Joe LoVasco ’07 is exhibiting at Mingo Gallery this fall in If Not By Chance; Collage and Sculpture by Joseph LoVasco on view: Sept. 17 – Oct. 26. There will be a Closing Reception Thursday, Oct. 24, 5 – 7 pm at  Mingo Gallery & Custom Framing, 284 Cabot St., Beverly.

Trained as a graphic designer yet passionate about art-making, LoVasco’s work expresses this cross training. The intense swatches of color and patterning found in his work echo the modes of design seen in magazines and advertisements. Yet the addition of found paper and antique receipts offers something more. LoVasco’s arrival at these visual conclusions was no accident. One might wonder, if not by chance, than how? Practicing ones passion, LoVasco’s work represents mistakes made and overcome. An accidental paint drop here or a mis-cut there; these are the moments of heartache and creativity that sets one artist apart from another.

The same strength can be found within his wood sculptures. The viewer is introduced to LoVasco’s sculptures with striking movement and bold colors. Yet, once again, there is a practiced resolve about these structures that softens and invites. The sculptures seem to be characters found within his collages; elements extracted and exemplified to create an overall sense of LoVasco’s visual intentions.

Exhibiting within the naturally lit space of the Mingo Gallery seemed a unique fit. Within this space, located squarely on Cabot Street and steps from the ocean, the viewer begins to understand those artistic intentions. Viewing LoVasco’s work might remind you of the summer walks at dusk amongst the historic, beautiful buildings of Beverly, MA. Or, even still, that last summer swim before it all turns quiet and gray.
