Alum John Joseph Hanright Opens “Iconic Style” in Boston
Alum John Joseph Hanright (’97) has a new exhibition opening in Boston on March 4th!
Alongside x-ray photographer Nick Veasey, Hanright will be exhibiting his work at the Samuel Owen Gallery in Boston.
Hanright’s work often features a combination of painting and collage, owing a particular debt to the aesthetic of mid-century American advertisements. Images cut from magazines, both vintage and contemporary, are layered and combined. The resulting a retro-nostalgia serves to bridge the gap between the past and the present. While the work displays a clear connection to Americana and Pop Art, Hanright also cites Michel Duchamp and Susan Rothenberg as major influences.
“When I’m trying to tell a story about Americana or rock and roll, I want to go for the ‘wow’ factor. As the viewer is driving away from the gallery, I want them to say, ‘I discovered something.’ Each time you look at it, it’s a new experience altogether.”
“Iconic Style” opens at the Samuel Owen Gallery on Friday, March 4. The opening reception will run from 6 – 8 PM at 460C Harrison Ave, Suite C-20, SoWa Art + Design District in Boston.
