Kara Hammond, Student, 2024
NANTUCKET MAN 2021
2021, charcoal, 36”x49”

As a graphic design student, Kara Hammond just completed her sophomore year at Montserrat College of Art. She is twenty years old and has experimented with all mediums ranging from compressed charcoal to tattoo ink to digital animations. In her free time, Kara enjoys picking up creative hobbies that allow her to share artwork with her friends and family by creating custom pieces upon request. While she is unsure of what her end career may be, she is certain that it will involve the things she loves…creating art.

Nantucket Man 2021 is a 36 x 49-inch charcoal homage to the American artist, Paul Cadmus. The original piece was part of a series referencing where Cadmus and his lover met in Nantucket, Massachusetts. As part of Kara’s final projects for her freshmen Drawing Two studio in her home state, Upstate New York, she researched an inspirational artist to create this large drawing. When she found Cadmus she fell in love with his use of line-work and his ability to represent the human form.

Josue Bessiake, Student, 2025
MARZANNA
2021, oil on canvas, 18”x 24”
Value: $500

The work I make is a manifestation of my curiosity and a testament to a newfound ambition of mine. I have always loved the act of making, I found it cathartic, however, the idea of being an artist felt daunting to me, so I strayed away from that and decided to treat it as a hobby. It wasn’t until I came face to face with the sheer possibilities that being an artist allows that I decided to let myself be enveloped by my love for making. As an artist, I feel that I have a responsibility to communicate to the world my vision and my ambition. I have a passion for the arts that I have finally felt free enough to pursue and I feel that as I am now obligated to communicate this sense of freedom and catharsis so that my audience can get a semblance of what creating means for me.

Oliver Balf, Faculty
WORKING WATERFRONT
1975, Painting, 23”x 31”
Value: $3,000

As a founding faculty member of Montserrat College of Art the impact of the late Oliver Balf continues to this day. A renowned artist, not only was Balf’s work displayed in premiere Boston galleries in the 80’s and 90’s, he also found success as a commercial artist working for such companies as the Boston Globe and Parker Brothers. Balf was a graduate of Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and later studied with the German abstract expressionist Hans Hoffman. It was during this time he discovered the burgeoning art scene in Cape Ann that would become so crucial to his artistic practice. In 1970, Balf and several other Cape Ann artists who taught together opened the doors to their own school of visual art, with dozens of students enrolled for Montserrat’s inaugural year. While receiving his honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from Montserrat in 1998, Balf said “When I think of all the things I’ve done to become an artist I realize that the most important work I’ve done has been teaching, and being a part of the founding group at Montserrat.”
