Admissions

Whatever your passion, you’ll find classes, gallery shows, internship opportunities, and ideas that inspire you at Montserrat College of Art. Our well-rounded, interdisciplinary approach to art education infuses art-making with research and critical thinking in each of our ten visual arts concentrations. With 400 students on campus, we’re the perfect size for bold artistic development from day one—that’s the tried-and-true Montserrat way.

Our 12-to-1 student-to-professor ratio allows Montserrat students to form meaningful relationships with our faculty of practicing artists, designers, and scholars. The faculty is deeply invested in our students’ artistic journeys, and Montserrat’s hands-on advising system ensures that every student stays on track and has access to our many resources (internships, travel abroad opportunities, mobility programs) during their time here.

In addition to their dedication to teaching, all Montserrat faculty are active and accomplished artists in their fields.

Foundation Year

Foundation year at Montserrat prepares students of all concentrations for a rigorous Bachelors of Fine Arts program. The Foundation Program combines hands-on studio classes with liberal arts courses, plus an experiential Color: Material and Light course that hones hands-on art-making techniques and critical thinking skills  through an exploration of the history, physicality, psychology and culture of color.

Montserrat’s Foundation Program is unique in its rigor, range, and connectivity between the studio disciplines, the liberal arts, and the real world. Through cross-disciplinary curriculum, it strives to build the platform  each Montserrat student will need to succeed over the next four years. Montserrat students also benefit from opportunities to explore elective studio courses of their own choosing during Foundation year.

Montserrat’s Foundation Program Includes:
  • Observation 1
  • Observation 2
  • Studio 1  – 2D, 3D and 4D
  • Studio 2 – 2D, 3D and 4D
  • Color: Material and Light

Each student is given their own designated studio space in which to work on their capstone project. Learn more about the senior capstone experience click here.
