March/April Events at MontserratBeverly, MA March 6, 2008 -
Montserrat Gallery Through April 6: It’s Getting Hot in Here Reflective of the ‘greener’ lifestyle trend, sustainability has been in the forefront of the public mind. This exhibit explores how this progressive philosophy affects art making. Eight regional and national artists will exhibit work in a range of media, including sculpture, performance, and installation. Although created within the context of global warming, much of the artwork itself is not about the environment or sustainability. Rather, the ‘green’ part of the work lies in the artistic process and the primarily recyclable, eco-friendly, and/or locally found materials used. Far from the 1960s ‘granola’ aesthetic, this exhibit embraces art whose elegant appearance belies the humble origins of much of the materials. Artists: Vaughn Bell, Ellen Driscoll, Niizeki Hiromi, Katie Osediacz, People Powered, Pat Shannon, Yuken Teruya, and Rachel Perry Welty. Curated by Leonie Bradbury and Shana Dumont. Related Artist Talk: Kevin Kaempf, Wednesday, March 5, 11:30 a.m. Kaempf, with Suraiya Hossain and Lora Lode, operates under the ‘corporate identity’ People Powered. Together they create community-based programs that introduce sustainable change and address ecological issues. One such intervention, Loop: Multi-Purpose Coverall, reprocesses mixes and redistributes household paint to prevent it from polluting the environment. Performance: Katie Osediacz, Wednesday, March 26, 6:30 p.m. For It’s Getting Hot in Here, video and performance artist Osediacz created a performance that speaks to the complexities and implications of our collective contemporary impulse to live ‘greener’ more sustainable lives.
