Experience two fun days of large scale drawing and painting with Jim Falck. This workshop encourages you to break out of minimal thinking and explore beyond your ordinary patterns of expression. Students respond with line, shape, color, and texture to create abstract and representational images in a playful environment of colorful still life objects, upbeat music, and a model (2nd Sat). Surprise, whimsy, happy accident, freedom and beauty happen when you let yourself draw from the “wild” side of your brain!   Learn the fundamentals of hand typesetting and letterpress printing. This course consists of lecture, demonstrations and studio time in Montserrat's letterpress shop. The first project will be a group broadside to help you familiarize yourselves with the basic tools and concepts of letterpress printing.  The second project will be a greeting or postcard.  You will create cards using type, printer's cuts and concepts of your choosing and whim.

Learn how to make quick and easy relief prints at home!  Block printing is an easy way to create a graphic image for decorating paper, fabric, or just about anything else you can think of. Learn the basics of planning, carving, and printing firsthand.  Come prepared with an image and you will head home with a finished print at the end of the day!

Whether you’re interested in making books as art, making blank journals or just curious about bookbinding, this course will help you understand the basic principles of a book’s construction and function. Topics to be covered in discussion and with hands on work are: paper – how to choose and work with different kinds (folding, cutting, determining grain direction etc); adhesives – what different adhesives do as well as when and how to use them; sewing – choosing threads and needles as well as various sewing techniques and tips; structure – how the structures work, their weaknesses and how to decide on a structure which complements the book’s content; and proportion – page size, shape, and thickness of book.
You will construct models of these basic binding structures: one sheet fold-up (aka flutter book or ox-plow), other simple folded structures, accordion, single section pamphlet, two section pamphlet and chain link stitch, multi section book.

 Adobe Photoshop™ can be intimidating; but with the proper guidance, any artist can use it to their benefit!  Students will gain a basic understanding of Photoshop™ and the techniques artists use to edit and crop their images: the principles of sizing and resolutions, the difference between file formats, contrast and color corrections, retouching, adjustment layers, managing color, printing procedures and the basic principles of file management.  We will also introduce the creative side of Photoshop and how to make perfect selections, create your very own cutting edge photo effects and produce professional finishing touches to all your photos.

Through the use of a variety of traditional and nontraditional media, this class encourages the expression of personal ideas and vision. Students explore the use of many collage materials including paper, photographs, books, maps and found objects. Experiment with tar, shylac, modeling paste and learn the process of encaustic wax and xerox transfer. Water based paints will be used.  This class includes demonstrations of materials, slides and discussion of contemporary artists. Experimentation and trusting one's process will be encouraged.
