Drawing on the Wild Side of the Brain

Experience two fun days of large scale drawing and painting with Jim Falck. This workshop encourages you to break out of minimal thinking and explore beyond your ordinary patterns of expression. Students respond with line, shape, color, and texture to create abstract and representational images in a playful environment of colorful still life objects, upbeat music, and a model (2nd Sat). Surprise, whimsy, happy accident, freedom and beauty happen when you let yourself draw from the “wild” side of your brain! Supplies are included; students are welcome to bring their favorite materials if they choose. Open to all!

WK158 Introduction to Bookbinding 2 days sessions

Are you curious about how books are made? This workshop will teach you the process. Construct models of basic binding structures: one-sheet fold-up, accordion, single section pamphlet, two sections pamphlet, long stitch and chain link.

You will bring home six books you made in a weekend. Open to all.

WK174 Introduction to Letterpress 2 days sessions

  Learn the fundamentals of hand typesetting and letterpress printing. This course consist of lecture, demonstrations and studio time in Montserrat's letterpress shop. The first project will be a group broadside to help you familiarize yourselves with the basic tools and concepts of letterpress printing.  The second project will be a greeting or postcard.  You will create cards using type, printer's cuts and concepts of your choosing and whim. The number of cards in the edition will correspond with the number of students in the class.  This way everyone will have an example of the other students' work.  Of course you're encouraged to make more for yourselves! Open to all.

In today’s world of digital photography, Adobe Photoshop™ is a must. In this class you will gain a basic understanding of Photoshop™ and the techniques photographers use to edit and crop their images: the principles of sizing and resolutions, the difference between file formats; contrast and color corrections, retouching, adjustment layers, managing color and printing procedures.  We will also cover the basic principles of file management and archiving your digital images.  The course is a combination of lectures, demonstations and hands-on practice and open to all skill levels.  Students should have a basic knowledge of a Windows or Mac Environment. THIS CLASS IS FULL.

Color Workshop

This is an  introductory course on color theory and its application to color mixing.  Aspects of hue, value, temperature and chroma will be discussed, with in-class exercies  to help make this information more accessible.  A wonderful opportunity for painters all all level to learn from a master of color.  

On Sunday between 2-3 PM we will review your work.  Bring a sketchbook for notes and color mixing exercises, a small set of good quality water base paints primary and secondary colors, a mixing surface or disposable palette, one small and one large brush, a container of water, scissors, glue stick and a reproduction of a painting which contains color mixtures which you will like to emulate.

Through the use of a variety of traditional and nontraditional painting media, this class encourages the expression of personal ideas and vision. Students explore many collage materials including paper, photographs, books, maps, fabric, sand and three dimensional objects. Experiment with modeling paste, tar, various drawing and painting tools and learn the process of using encaustic wax and Xerox transfer.  Water based paints will be used.  The course includes demonstrations of materials, slides and discussion of contemporary artists and critiques. Experimentation will be encouraged as well as trusting in one's own process while developing a series of paintings that resonate with personal meaning.

Wk388 Adobe Camera Raw Workshop 2 days sessions

This will introduce you to the principles of the Adobe Raw Camera Workflow which includes making your exposures using the Camera Raw file format, processing your images in Adobe Camera Raw file image editing, color correction, color management and large format inkjet printing.  We will cover everything from basic camera settings to advanced color management workflow and printing procedures.  You do not need to be an exper in Photoshop to take advantage of this course.  All students should have a camera that provides the Raw file format. Includes lab fee.

Saturday, March 20 - Culinary Creations in Paper Sculpture with Margaurita Spears

Paper isn't always two-dimensional; it can be three-dimensional and sensational too. Make culinary masterpieces as you learn the importance of color, texture and plate presentation, all without the use of a kitchen.  The key ingredients for this eyecatching cuisine are paper, paint and imagination.  With these tools of the artistic trade, you will cook up a sculptural smorgabord.

 

Saturday, March 27 - Quill you do it? with Margaurita Spears

The art of paper quilling-rolling thin strips of paper into intricate designs-has been practiced for hundreds of years, from the ladies of ancient Eqypt to the nuns of the 18th centry.  A tour of the gallery will inspire students to create thier own low-relief nature inspired compostion.
