SHOCKINGLY GOOD BOOK ART COURSE
Sarah Smith

This course is designed to teach you the basics of two traditional techniques that are enjoying a modern resurgence: bookbinding and letterpress. Join us in our letterpress shop to gain access to our platen and Vandercook presses and bookmaking equipment. Along with mastering the art of setting metal and wood type, students will also have the opportunity to convert their own imagery into a printable format by creating polymer plates. Additionally, learn to sew, fold and glue some simple binding structures to bring images, text and three-dimensional ideas together. By the end of the course, you will have produced bound and printed models as well as a simple artist book of your own.

DEEPENING YOUR PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH PAINTING AND DRAWING
Timothy Hawkesworth and Lala Zeitlyn

Working with live models in an energized and supportive environment, we will explore how you see and experience the world, how you make decisions while painting, and how to fill out and free your work so that it can line up with your personal vision. In addition, we will explore the nature of creativity and the history of image making; you will gain a frame of reference and see how your work ties into this history. We want you to leave here fully fired up and aligned with your work. This is learning by immersion. It's intensive and often transformative.

ABSTRACT PAINTING
Laurel Sparks

This course challenges students technically and conceptually through the exploration of different modes of abstract painting. Various strategies are examined, with the primary focus of the class being an elaboration of such basic ideas as color, tonal structure, scale and composition as they apply to abstraction. The class will be structured as an open studio, and sessions will fluctuate between in-class assignments and individual studio work, with individual and group critiques. Approaches will include abstraction from pictorial themes, non-objectivity, collage, and minimalism.

CLASSICAL PORTRAITURE
Kathy Speranza

The goal of this workshop is to teach you the strategic thinking and technical approach used by great figurative painters for centuries. Working from a live model, we will employ a logical and clear strategy for creating subtle and naturalistic portraits. Strategies for achieving likeness, modeling of form and an efficient way to mix and apply the nuanced colors of life will be explored. This course will provide the student with conceptual and technical tools that can be incorporated into their own personal portrait style.

June 18 – 22
MONOTYPES + MONOPRINTS
Robert Siegelman

Monoprints and monotypes are one-of-a-kind prints which lend themselves to working quickly, and working in series. Monotype printmaking is a very easy technique to learn, and is an incredibly fun medium in which to experiment. It is a natural introduction to printmaking. This intensive workshop will encourage both experimentation and the development of one's content, and personal imagery. The class will be run as an open studio, during which we will explore various print techniques, and work in a supportive community environment.

June 18 – 22
COLLAGE
Tim Harney

This course explores collage and the variety of materials which can be used to express ideas and emotions in visual form. The history of collage, as well as modernist and contemporary developments will be introduced and discussed. Each day will provide time for studio work, discussion and critique. The first part of the workshop week consists of directed involvements. Experimentation and interpretation will be encouraged. The latter part of the week will allow for more self-directed work.

MIXED MEDIA
Julie Graham

Defining a personal conceptual direction, students in this workshop will investigate relationships between content and the materials that best express it. We will explore the possibilities that exist in pushing and merging traditional boundaries through experimentation, class discussion, demonstrations and critiques. Students are expected to ask questions of themselves and others in order to move beyond the predictable. Materials explored will include plaster, wood, paper, various binders, mediums, solvents, and textural additives. We will concentrate on acrylic paint and binders, but oil can be used as a final part of the painting process.
