This painting class offers a supportive environment to work at one's own pace. Students may work in either oil or acrylic paint. Still life, photographs, memory or one's own ideas may all be a source of inspiration. Painter Bea Modisett will guide you through the intricacies of this versatile medium from glazing to impasto to resists and reductive techniques. Through flexible assignments using abstract and non-objective approaches, students will work in class and at home with a variety of sizes and materials including paper, vellum, canvas and panel to expand their knowledge of acrylic painting and work to develop understanding of the paint’s capabilities.Students will leave with an advanced understanding of acrylic paint including set up and clean up, with the confidence to continue to explore and experiment with this versatile material. Students will bring home a number of explorative paintings and drawings, one larger piece completed as the final project as well as a small library of resource and guide materials provided throughout the class. Some painting experience required.

This course follows the history of Western art music from the Middle Ages to the present. It will help students understand its development in social and cultural contexts, and its connection to other art forms. Elements of music, historical periods and styles, and lives of composers will be explored through the direct experience of listening. Evaluation of student work will include final research paper, live performance report, and written examinations. The ability to read music is not required.
The required textbook is The Enjoyment of Music, by Kristine Forney and Joseph Machlis. The book comes with resource DVD and four accompanying CD's.
