“I congratulate all of the talented young artists from area schools who participated in this year’s Congressional Art Competition,” Congressman Tierney said. “The competition is a great way to encourage and showcase these students’ unique skills and I know that I will be impressed by all the artwork on display during the awards ceremony on Saturday. I especially look forward to seeing Riley McCarthy prize winning artwork displayed in the Capitol building for the next year."
The exhibition was juried by Gloucester Art Collector, William Trayes and Beverly's Mingo Gallery Owner and Montserrat alumna, Katherine Romansky '07. It was open to high school students from public and private schools within the 6th Congressional District of Massachusetts, as well as high school students home-schooled within the district.
Each winner will be presented with a citation from Congressman Tierney and varying levels of scholarships to Montserrat College of Art’s Summer Pre-College Program. The grand prize winning piece will be sent to Washington, DC where it will hang in the Capitol building for one year along with winners from other Congressional districts across the country. A ceremony to congratulate all the winners will be held in Washington, DC in June.
Since 1982, more than 650,000 high school students around the nation have participated in the Congressional Art Competition. It is an opportunity for members of Congress to acknowledge the artistic talents of their young constituents and for the artwork of the district’s most gifted students to be showcased on the national stage.
