Montserrat Zombies Storm the Streets of Beverly

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Zombies took to the streets of Beverly in April, searching for “survivors.” What may have appeared like a scene from “The Walking Dead,” was actually students from Montserrat College of Art’s Theatre FX Club!

The club is the combination of the old Theatre Club and the new Special Effects Club. Its focus is to combine the skills of acting and theatre with talents of special effects and costume design. The Zombie Walk throughout the Montserrat campus and downtown Beverly was designed to bring attention to the club and show off the skills of the students involved.

The club currently consists of about 25 students and has only been running for a few months. The Theatre FX Club is run by the clubs leaders and co-founders: Josh Melamed, Tim Olech, Arianne Schwalbe, Ariel Jones, Brittanny Handiboe and Lisa Martinez. The combination of their acting experiences and love for special effects make events such as the Zombie Walk a possibility.

They have many more projects in the works; residents and visitors to the Garden City will see and hear from these students again in the future.

For more information on upcoming events or if you would like to invite the theatre FX club to participate in an event contact our Office of Residential Life at 978-921-4242 x1134 or rob.mclaughlin@montserrat.edu.

Boston Comic Con: Alumni Reunion Extravaganza

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

Above: Alum Michael Crocket ’97 and student Will Potroff

Assoc. Prof. Blyth Hazen hosted a Montserrat College of Art table at Boston Comic Con this past weekend. The event turned out to be an incredible student showcase and alumni reunion extravaganza!

Asst. Prof. Mark Hoffmann printed examples of student illustration work. Dave Ferreira‘s Comics and Sequential Art class pulled together a very nice portfolio of student comics. Students Will Potroff and Val Toukatly worked the table with Prof. Hazen while Potroff did commissioned drawings!

Also, alumnus Adam Miller ’00 organized alumni, who were hosting their own tables at the event, to come be special guests at Montserrat’s table. Alumni who sat behind the table and shared their time, artwork and books included: John Cardinal ’99, Andy Houle ’00, Michael Crocket ’97, Joe Haley ’00, TJ Dort, Josh Morrissette ’00, and Miller of Terminal Press. Other alumni who were there working their own tables: Logan Faerber ’09, Jacki Musto ’05, Chris Parent ’10.

Thank you John Kotis 87, Don Raphael ’98, Peter Kalabokis ’89, Bethany Kalabokis ’90, Eric Kirchberg, Christina Coyne 11, David Snyder ’07, Kristine Cornetta ’08, Alicia Antreasian ’10, Colvis Medeiros ’09, Paul Demakes ’11 and Jon Brown ’11 for stopping by the Montserrat table! We appreciate your reflections on your positive Montserrat experiences!

A BIG thank you goes out to everyone who made this past weekend such an incredible collaboration!

We are already looking forward to next year’s Comic Con!
