Montserrat Galleries = Top 10 in Boston

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

Anne Siems, Hummingbird Girl, 2010, mixed media on panel

Congratulations to Gallery Director Leonie Bradbury for being recognized (again!) for Montserrat College of Art’s spring 2011 exhibit Debt to Pleasure. The exhibit was featured in The Boston Globe’s list of “Top Gallery Exhibits in 2011.”

“For unadulterated visual luxury, nothing beat A Debt to Pleasure, a ravishing yet unsettling show organized at Montserrat College of Art Gallery by gallery director Leonie Bradbury,” said Cate McQuaid from The Boston Globe. “Artists played off the hallucinatory beauty evoked in allegorical strains of art history, from 17th-century Dutch painting to 19th-century American folk art. Set together in a contemporary gallery, these works evoked a heightened sense of time’s gulf, and how we shape history to fit our present-day needs.”

Susan Calhoun’s Practicum in the DR

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Nurse Susan Calhoun will be going to the Dominican Republic, from Jan. 7-21, 2012, to provide health care to rural villagers as a practicum experience for her Masters of Nursing degree at Salem State University. Susan will be working with the organization Intercultural Nursing, Inc., based in Rhode Island. She will be treating 100 patients a day in each clinic, while supervising several University of Rhode Island undergraduate nursing students. Susan is paying for her own airfare and accommodations while in the DR. However, each volunteer is asked to bring one large duffel bag with supplies. She is asking for donations of the following supplies:

Needed items: bar soap, toothpaste, tooth brushes, sandwich paper bags, small zip lock plastic bags, inexpensive hats with visors (can be gently used), white socks, razors, reading glasses, sunglasses, sewing kits, multivitamins, and antacid tablets.

In addition, donations also can be made to Susan so she can buy over the counter medications in bulk, or to “INI” and the Nurse Practitioner will use $$ to purchase antibiotics and other supplies for our clinic. All donations are tax deductible and receipts will be issued from INI. She will be accepting donations in person each Mon-Fri from 9am-2pm, and there will be a box outside the Health Center for donations to be dropped off when she is not here. Susan appreciates anything you can share!
