President Immerman’s voice is one of countless others who reinforce the crucial role that Arts Education has on the future of America.

This year’s 32nd Annual Christmas in Salem Historic House Tour included President Steve Immerman’s home, which was one of this year’s favorites! Linda Orlomoski and her friend Juli Lederhaus, from Salem’s Hawthorne Hotel, were given a private tour of President Immerman and his wife Darcy’s home (The Clarence S. Clark House near the Salem Public Library) and couldn’t help but relish in the experience!

“From the time I walked up the front steps and past the Ionic columns to stand under the semi-circular portico to enter the house through the wreath-adorned front door to the time I went back out the front door and down those same steps, I was totally enchanted and – to borrow Walt’s word – smitten!” … “When I was told that we had been given the opportunity to see the house, I was also told that the homeowner collected Santas and that she had over 500 but I must have heard her wrong as that number was a just a teensy-tiny bit off. As it turned out there was probably triple that number if not more! That’s a lot of Santas in one house but with over 5,000 square feet and 13 rooms!” … “I walked around and continued to take pictures feeling like I stepped into the pages of an issue of House Beautiful.”

President Steve Immerman’s article on “STEAM not STEM” was published in this week’s New England Journal of Higher Education entitled Letting Off STEAM at Montserrat College of Art. He discussed the necessary innovative skills that students need to succeed in today’s ever changing creative economy and emphasized how essential an education that stimulates creativity and innovation is in today’s climate.

President Immerman is among several other important figures who are constantly promoting the idea that the existing foundation on STEM educational framework (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) should also include an equivalent concentration on Arts and Design.

“Our thinking about education needs to shift from preparing students for specific careers, to preparing students for careers we have not yet even imagined,” said Immerman. “Visual Arts education also demands strong problem-solving skills, engages students in the processes of critical analysis, and prepares students for the give and take of collaborative work. All these perspectives, experiences and skills are central to adaptable and creative lives and careers, regardless of the path an individual student may take.”

Of the 11 students who graduated from the program, one will attend Bucknell University on a four-year scholarship, one will attend Endicott College, one will attend Montserrat, and the eight others will enroll at North Shore Community College, according to Linda Saris, director of Salem CyberSpace.

The graduates, who are all seniors at Salem High School, are Ashley Colon, Ryan Frias, Aurora McNeill, Sandra Castillo, Carol Verdejo, Scarlett Gonzalez, Katheryn Toribio, Sharon Martinez, Madelin Cueto, Vladimir Aguasvivas and Rose-Berline Pauleus.
