Montserrat students & alumnus in local film screening

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Ethan Berry, Professor of Photography at Montserrat College of Art, has curated a body of Super 8 films to be screened at 17 Cox following Beverly Arts Fest this Saturday June 18th.  The Infinite Format, features films by Gordon and Tera Miranda Nelson of MassArt, Paul Turano of Emerson College and our own Kathleen Brennan of Montserrat ’11, in addition to films made during Berry’s Super 8 workshop, as part of Montserrat’s Continuing Education Department.

The film series is produced by The Northeast Institute for Analog Studies, an organization specializing in the reclaimation and proliferation of “shadow based” media.  Ethan Berry manages “The Institute” from the Montserrat’s Photography Department, which holds a substantial collection of objects.  This is the first time The Institute has worked with 17 Cox, an exhibition space in Beverly that proclaims to be “the most efficient visual art center in the world”.  17 Cox is directed by Lucas Spivey, Exhibitions Manager for Montserrat Galleries.

Pre-College Students with Tin Can Sally

Friday, July 24th, 2009

We saw our own Tin Can Sally’s – FLOCK in the Trash Menagerie Exhibition at the PEM in Salem. Sally even gave us a demo of her potentially dangerous process (cutting metal). Everyone came out with all ten fingers intact.

Tribute to Michael Jackson

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Pre-College students used their creative talents and decorated a glove on Tuesday night while watching the Tribute to Michael Jackson – “King of Pop”. This group got a little carried away and glued the glove to their hands.  You’ll know who they are when you see them.

Montserrat College of Art will hold its annual Pre-College Summer Program in July. The program will bring 28 students from 15 states to Beverly.

Besides their foundation drawing class and three other courses each weekday, the students will participate in Open studios, activities, field trips, and several museum outings. Most of the students live on campus with resident assistants.

The students’ week begins with a scavenger hunt of downtown Beverly to help them get their bearings and feel comfortable on campus and in town. They also have an opportunity to spend time with the gallery staff about the exhibits they will be going to visit. Field trips to Boston included the  Institute of Contemporary Art – Shepard Fairey: Supply and Demand; Museum of Fine Arts – Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese: Rivals in Renaissance Venice; and Peabody Essex Museum in Salem – Surfland: Photographs by Joni Sternbach, and Trash Menagerie, Flock – Tin Can Sally is pseudonym for Sally Seamans ,  Montserrat’s Image Librarian.

One student described the experience on her blog “Montserrat was, in short, an incredible experience. Sure, a LOT happened that I hadn’t bargained for … and I learned something every day. Sure, in the classes I took, but more in the friendships and conversations I had with people.”

The program will end with an exhibit of students’ work to which parents and friends will be invited on July 31 from 6:00 – 8:00.
