Ode to a Bicycle…

Friday, December 10th, 2010

Beverly’s Centraal Cycle was packed with poetry enthusiasts Thurs., Oct. 28, as Montserrat’s first stop on the Improbable Places Poetry Tour. The series of poetry readings was launched this fall by Montserrat Writing Center Director Colleen Michaels. At the Centraal Cycle event, poets read from their bicycle-themed works, singing the praises of the common conveyance. It may look like nothing more than a contraption with wheels, chains, saddlebags and handle bars, but in the musings of poets, a bicycle transports its rider to worlds of new possibility, relationship and adventure. The Poetry of Motherhood

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Colleen Michaels, director of Montserrat’s Writing Center

Colleen Michaels, director of Montserrat’s Writing Center, manages to nurture both her poetic muse and her eight-year-old daughter Eliza.  Writer, mother, teacher and art lover – Michaels is a regular contributor to the journal “The Mom Egg,” (www.themomegg) a vehicle that promotes and celebrates the creative force of mother artists everywhere. How does Michaels balance her artistry with the demands of motherhood? As she says, “both roles have taught me to wake up early, choose my words carefully, and feel pretty swell about the world.”

Sat., Nov. 13, 2010, Michaels is reading her poem “These Are the Rules Regarding Glitter” at The Mom Egg Fall Reading hosted by the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City. The event will be held at 308 Bowery, from 1:30 – 3:45 pm. Admission is $5. For more information visit www.bowerypoetry.com.
