“Daisy, North Adams, Massachusetts 2009”

Trustee John Peterman

Newly appointed Montserrat trustee John Peterman may spend his days as the headmaster of Brookwood School in Manchester, but in his spare time he is an accomplished photographer. Peterman’s artistry with a camera was recently recognized by COLOR magazine, a publication dedicated to collectors of fine photography. His color portrait titled “Daisy, North Adams, Massachusetts 2009” received a full page spread in a recent issue of COLOR – along with the magazine’s prestigious Gold Award in a contest designed to elicit “new and exciting work from photographers around the world who are under-represented or less well-known.”

NBYH will launch its first of a series of fine art photography exhibits, honoring local history and nature, with fine art photographer, Brian Call. Mr. Call’s tribute to the “Everglades Beauty and Bounty” will be hosted at 436 Bayfront Place on Friday, October 22, 2010 with a private reception for patrons from both NBYH and Friends of the Fakatachee Strand State Preserve.

Brian Call is a graduate of Montserrat College of Art, where he studied fine arts and graduated in 1985 with a major in Illustration and a minor in Graphic Design. Through the use of composition and light his images capture a sense of intimacy and wonder, while reflecting his passion and devotion to protecting the natural environment. In recent years his photography has expanded to include documenting Florida’s historical places, such as Stiltsville in Biscayne Bay.

His work is repeatedly described as having a unique vision in style and content as well as employing a masterful execution of his craft. Brian recently completed an Artist in Residence at the Deering Estate at Cutler where he had chronicled Florida’s past through a series of fine art photo exhibits – “Wilderness,” “Bay Side,” and his final exhibit “Endangered” – that all detail the beauty and peril of Florida’s rich flora, fauna, and architecture.

Brian has been exhibiting his work in both solo and group exhibitions in Florida and Massachusetts where his work is collected both nationally and internationally.

Some of his credits include Nature’s Best Magazine, National Wildlife, National Parks Magazine, PBS, Nature Photographer, Miami Monthly, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, and the Deering Estate at Cutler. (briancallphotography.com)

Professor Gabrielle Keller of the Photo and Video Department was one of several artists included in the show “Animalia” at the Center for Fine Art Photography at 400 North College Avenue
Fort Collins, CO.  www.c4fap.org

The “Animalia” exhibit featured images by photographers from around the world, juried by Karen Irvine, Curator for the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago. It was on display from May 8 – June 26.

The images raise provocative questions about human-animal interactions and the complexities of these relationships.

Paris – Minnesota comes to Beverly, MA

Monday, September 21st, 2009

If you are familiar with Alec Soth’s work, you should know exactly what Paris-Minnesota is. Meanwhile, if you are not familiar with Montserrat College of Art, you will never guess where Beverly, MA is. But that doesn’t really matter because Alec Soth is showing his work at the Montserrat Gallery this summer. A combination of Fashion Magazine and people from his home town all together to create one, if not the best, of his work. His influences are Walker Evans, Robert Frank and Stephen Shore. Here is a quote from Soth: “I fell in love with the process of taking pictures, with wandering around finding things. To me it feels like a kind of performance. The picture is a document of that performance.”

So, if you are around Beverly, MA during the spring of 2010, stop by the Montserrat Gallery and see one of the most complex and conceptual photo shows put together and if you are not around, well start driving because you will regret it if you miss the show.
