Data as Art Opening Reception

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

Random Access: Data as Art
On View: Feb. 3 – March 31
Reception: Feb. 2, 5 – 8pm

Each of the artists in this exhibition uses data as a source to define the visual outcome of the pieces. Random Access explores the stories that are revealed as data becomes visualized as works of art. Joelle Dietrick mixes data regarding foreclosed homes and Sherwin-Williams 2007 Color Forecast paints. Reese Inman uses mapping source imagery of an existing space and remixes it with the visual surface of another to create a visualization of the space between them. George Legrady focuses on aesthetic research through integrating data mapping, data visualization and self-organizing algorithms into interactive art installations. Nathalie Miebach translates scientific data related to astronomy, ecology and meteorology into woven sculptures. Casey Reas illustrates the forms, behaviors, and elements that are the foundation of software that combines drawing with generative processes to explore a network.

The exhibit is sponsored exclusively by Relevant Data Corp. “Everyone at Relevant Data Corp. is proud to support a local institution like Montserrat College of Art,” said Marshall Sterman, Chairman and CEO of Relevant Data Corp. “In today’s creative economy – more visual than ever before – the ability to ‘mine data’ and make it come alive is increasingly important. Our goal of making real-time analytics available to business and industry ties in perfectly with the participating artists’ use of data as art.

FOR THE RECORD Featured in Artscope Magazine

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011
Montserrat Galleries FOR THE RECORD show was featured in Artscope Magazine’s Sept./Oct. Issue. The article encapsulates the show’s objective interpretations of the subjective experiences one faces in the midst of war and global conflict. The artwork not only focuses on the perspective of the individuals’ who are fighting in wars, but also, the impression the conflict has on the bystanders, the culture, and the physical land itself. The art offers an outlet for viewers to realize, challenge, and understand their own perception and feelings towards war.

Paris – Minnesota comes to Beverly, MA

Monday, September 21st, 2009

If you are familiar with Alec Soth’s work, you should know exactly what Paris-Minnesota is. Meanwhile, if you are not familiar with Montserrat College of Art, you will never guess where Beverly, MA is. But that doesn’t really matter because Alec Soth is showing his work at the Montserrat Gallery this summer. A combination of Fashion Magazine and people from his home town all together to create one, if not the best, of his work. His influences are Walker Evans, Robert Frank and Stephen Shore. Here is a quote from Soth: “I fell in love with the process of taking pictures, with wandering around finding things. To me it feels like a kind of performance. The picture is a document of that performance.”

So, if you are around Beverly, MA during the spring of 2010, stop by the Montserrat Gallery and see one of the most complex and conceptual photo shows put together and if you are not around, well start driving because you will regret it if you miss the show.
