Guided by Gabin

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

More than 35 Montserrat alumni recently contributed their works to the Guided by Gabin art exhibit at Brickbottom Gallery Dec. 2 – 4.

Guided by Gabin was an exhibition of work by one of Montserrat’s founding faculty member Prof. George Gabin’s former students, colleagues, artist friends and neighbors. Their work represented a celebration of Gabin’s influence and achievements. Proceeds of the sales went towards materials for Gabin’s show at the Chase Young Gallery in February 2012.

“His dedication was deeply inspiring to his students and his colleagues at Montserrat,” said Montserrat’s Dean of Faculty Laura Tonelli. “As one of his Montserrat colleagues once said, ‘No student who studied with George will ever forget him or his love of art.’”

In 1970, Gabin was one of eight artists who originally decided to start an art school on the North Shore, where he ended up serving as a professor of art at Montserrat from 1970-1998.

Michael Pratt, a former student of Gabin’s from 1987-1994 who helped organize the exhibit, explained that it was important to be able to give back to a professor who gave so much to his students. “George was not only a painter but a composer, and he worked tirelessly tuning us to be the best and to showcase our abilities,” he said. “It’s a great feeling that I was able to get people to band together for such a great cause.”

Founding faculty members Roger Martin, left, and Ollie Balf, right, flank Montserrat President Steve Immerman during a meeting at the college last week. The two founders came to meet the new president and each donated a piece of their art to the upcoming Artrageous!24 benefit art auction, which will be held May 1. Both men live on Cape Ann and still continue to paint and create art.
