“Sugar of Life: Frances Ferro Carreiro”

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Montserrat College of Art is proud to present alumna and artist Frances Ferro Carreiro with a solo exhibition of her drawings and paintings at Montserrat College of Art, where she  first attend classes 30 years ago. Carreiro described her work as “spiritual food” and that color was the “sugar of life.” Never without a sketchbook, Carreiro began painting sketches and watercolors of landscapes and motifs before experimenting with abstraction in collage, acrylic and oil.

Frances Ferro Carreiro was born October 21, 1921 in Cambridge, MA.  She settled in Gloucester in 1958 where she raised six children with her husband, Nicholas, and resided until her death, June 22, 2001.  She attended Salem State College and received a diploma from Montserrat School of Art in 1980; Carreiro later earned her BFA from Montserrat College of Art in 2001.  She credited Montserrat faculty, in particular Paul Scott, as giving “a firm basic structure and allow[ing] a freedom of expression from one’s inner self”.
