Sara Benson Accepted into Yale Norfolk Summer Program

Congratulations to current student Sara Benson, who has been accepted into the prestigious 2012 Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship program for the Art Division of the Yale Summer School of Music and Art in Norfolk, CT! The program focuses on painting, drawing, printmaking and digital photography. Only a small group of highly accomplished and diverse students are accepted from the US. The selected students are considered to be the strongest young artists in their current state of development, and who show the greatest curiosity both about the history of art and about art making now!

This year’s 2012 Commencement Speaker Gregory Crewdson will be one of the visitors to the program this summer! He will also be featured in Montserrat’s Schlosberg Gallery this May!

Also, several alumni and students have been accepted to grad schools: Lillie Harden ’08, MassArt; Eben Kling ‘09, UMass; Catalina Viejo ’05, Hunter College; Chelsea Sams ‘08, University of South Florida; and our 2013 Commencement speaker Arielle Winchester ’12 has been accepted into the BU Graphic Design program. Brian Savignano ’05 had his thesis show this week this month for BU Design.

Montserrat Alumni at Comic Con

Boston Comic Con is coming this weekend, April 21 and 22! Come see three Monserrat alumni John Cardinal ’99, Andrew Houle ’00 and Michael Crockett ’97. They will be featuring a Con Exclusive full color sketchbook, as well as hundreds of prints, sketches and pieces of original art. If you’re anywhere near Boston come and show them your support!

Workshop with Former Faculty and Alumnus Nathan Walker

Former faculty member and alumnus Nathan Walker ’02 presents a ‘Scrap Sculpture’ workshop at the Children’s Museum of NH. Fans of the Giant Blue Crab outside the Museum will have an opportunity to learn about sculpture from the crab’s creator! On Saturday, April 14 from 10:30 am – noon, Seacoast-based artist Nathan Walker (also the creator of Portsmouth’s famous Red Ant!) is offering an adult-child workshop to make Bug Bottle Bot sculptures from a variety of scrap materials.

Walker had a passion for art from an early age. He studied sculpture at the University of New Hampshire, pursued animation with the Associates of Art in Los Angeles, discovered environmental art in Australia, and finished his degree in illustration at Montserrat College of Art. He currently works as a freelance illustrator and visiting artist, with projects that extend from children’s books and murals to graphic design and sculpture. Alumnus/Faculty Brian Savignano Thesis Show at BU

Former graduate, current Montserrat graphic design teacher and prospective 2012 MFA graduate, Brian Savignano ’05 is having his thesis exhibit as part of the Boston University MFA graphic design graduate group exhibit. The group exhibit, entitled Open Ended will showcase the work of the 14 members of MFA graphic design graduate group. All are welcome and encouraged to attend the opening April 13 from 6 – 8 pm at the Stone Gallery in Boston. On view through April 29.

Montserrat Workshops at Wenham Museum

Looking for something fun and educational for your children to do over April Vacation?

Montserrat College of Art’s Continuing Education Department has teamed up with the Wenham Museum to hold two youth programs this April during school vacation week! Montserrat alumna Margaurita Spear ‘09 will be teaching both workshops for children ages 7 and older April 18-19th at the Wenham Museum, 132 Main Street, Wenham, MA.

Storybook Illustrations
Wednesday April 18; 10 am – 12 pm (Ages 7+)
Learn how to assemble and illustrate hard-bound storybooks using creativity, imagination and inspiration! Design the cover, create the imagery, and develop the story for your own unique literary treasure.

Hand-crafted Dollhouse Furniture
Thursday, April 19; 10 am – 12 pm (Ages 7+)
Nothing says luxury like a four-poster bed for your doll’s master bedroom. Craft beautiful 1/12 scale furniture using ingenuity, found materials and a touch of elegance. Finished pieces are suitable for placement in a dollhouse or miniatures display.

Single Sessions: Members $22.00; non-members $27.00
