A collaboration between Jeffrey Newell and Atomic Café artists!

Some Atomic customers enjoy artwork in the form of decoratively topped latte foam, but for Director of Admissions Jeffrey Newell, its bagels! A daily routine of simply buying a bagel every morning for 7 years has become an art form! “A new element was woven into my Atomic Café experience about 2 years ago when a small message was written on my bagel wrapper in black sharpie pen,” said Newell. “Then another message the next day. Then it grew to a silly little drawing. One time color was added. And then another color. A new artist took the pen. Another drawing was created with a different message, over and over again. It was the start of a new style of communication between customer and barista.”

The daily bagel wrapper art were all captured on Newell’s iPhone and document the collaboration. The designs range from funny faces, weather forecasts, to even a Tic-Tac-Toe game! Please visit Atomic Café at 265 Cabot St., Beverly to see the “I <3 Bagel” art for yourself!

Montserrat Admissions Materials Win Awards

Make Art. Live Forever.

When does tan magically turn to purple? When it’s the front cover of the 2011-2012 Montserrat College of Art Catalogue.  Actually, it’s not magic. It’s light-sensitive ink. Place the catalogue in direct sunlight, and the tan cover transforms. Not only does it shift colors, but formerly concealed words are revealed: MAKE ART.

In the eyes of the judges for the CASE Awards this year, the catalogue’s distinctive design was worthy of nothing less than a silver award in the admissions viewbooks category.  Competing with such major educational institutions as McGill University, Holy Cross and Boston University, Montserrat College of Art is a member of the District I Division of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).  In addition to winning the Silver Award for the viewbook, Montserrat also received Honorable Mention for its entire collection of admissions materials.

“Being a college devoted to the visual arts, it was really great to be recognized in a competition related to a visual product,” said Jeffrey Newell, Montserrat’s director of admissions.  A  2004 graduate of Montserrat, Newell worked closely with Moore Moscowitz, the Boston-based design company behind the award-winning publication.

Application Mayhem

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

While the Admissions Office enjoyed a nice holiday break, the college’s mailroom was quite busy.  Upon our return, we were greeted with bins of mail of application materials from prospective students.  We sharpened our letter openers, and dove in!  It was great to see so many interested students getting their application materials in to us over the holiday.  A lot of students applied online too, which can save a tree, and we appreciate that.  This week, we are busy reviewing lots of interesting portfolios and reading many passionate artist statements!  I hope their parents have all filed their FAFSAs!  We are looking forward to getting to know all of these talented applicants over the next few months. Happy 2010!
