Montserrat Student Evaluations

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Angie Hill ’13 explaining the work she had done over the fall '11 semester to Asst. Prof. Rhoda Rosenberg, Asst. Prof. James Durrett, Prof. Blyth Hazen and Prof. Gabrielle Keller

In addition to class evaluations, students are evaluated by a faculty evaluation panel at the end of the semester where they present an exhibition of their end of the semester’s work. The evaluation and critique is meant to help the student in planning and focusing for the next semester of study.

This past fall semester ended with a mixture of anxiety, excitement and relief as the students prepared for their December evaluations in front of a panel of Montserrat faculty members. The students reflected on their “Aha!” moments they reached during the semester including: self-discovery, what inspired them, perspective growth, what inspires them, etc. The constructive criticism and praise that that students received from the faculty evaluation panel helped the students prepare for next semester!

Join Montserrat’s Art Historian Marjorie Augenbraum and MASS ART’s Bakalar & Paine Galleries Curator of Education, India Clark for a lesson on the art of seeing.

1:30 – 3PM – The Creative Economy: The industries of the 21st Century depend on the generation of knowledge through creativity and design, but what specific role do artists play in this important shift? Discuss this topic with a panel of creative professionals and consider where you fit in. Panelists include Sarah Pandapas – Freelance Designer at Murrow Creative, Michael Pratt – Owner/Designer of Michael Pratt Design, Livia Cowan, President and Creative Director at Mariposa, and Don Bowen Principal at Meridian Associates.

3:30 – 5PM – This is Boston Not ______: Every city has its own artistic climate with unique challenges and opportunities. How do you discover who to pay attention to? And who should pay attention to you? As you consider where your art career may take you, join the discussion with this panel of artists and art professionals about the creative culture of Boston and the surrounding areas. The panel will include MFA Boston’s Curatorial Research Associate and Independent Curator Liz Munsell, Samson Projects owner/curator Camilo Alvarez, Artist and Author Caleb Neelon, Journalist Greg Cook and Artist and MFA Boston’s Community Art’s Initiative Instructor Raul Gonzalez.

Also, The Art of the Interview, open to seniors only, will prepare students to properly communicate with potential employers that the skills they have learned at Montserrat make them a valuable player in the creative economy. Eight previously selected seniors will participate in mock interviews with Montserrat Trustees Henrietta Gates and Betsy Hopkins including discussions, written feedback, and a video recording of the interview will be sent to them afterwards.

Montserrat faculty members assembled in Schenardi, a remarkable 19th century café, for their faculty meeting during this summer’s four-week residential cultural program in Viterbo, Italy.

The café’s room where they gathered in had a McDonalds “stand” built about five years ago, however, it only lasted a few months because the Italians complained of the puzza (bad smell).
