Faculty member Colleen Michael’s poem “The Second Poem Speaks” was chosen to be included in the show “Saints and Sinners.” It is an art and poetry exhibition that is being held at the Durrell Theatre in Cambridge as part of the production of “Quills.”

Exploring the Etruscan Tombs

Students from Montserrat College of Art who are studying for three weeks in and around Viterbo, Italy, explore Etruscan tombs during an outing with Dean Laura Tonelli, who is an art historian. The tombs offer the students a peek into the life and art of the Etruscans through the elaborate murals they painted which exist to this day in the tombs’ interiors. Photos by Darrell Masumoto.

Montserrat College of Art Liberal Arts faculty member Erin Dionne, www.erindionne.com/ the author of two books aimed at teenaged girls, was interviewed on Magic 106.7 radio recently. Also in the interview was poet January O’Neil. Dionne is the author of “Models Don’t Eat Chocolate” (Dial Books, 2009) and “The Total Tragedy of a Girl Named Hamlet” (Dial, 2010), which is going into paperback in spring 2011. Kristine Williams will unveil her mural “Resurrection Theme”

“Resurrection Theme”, Kristine Williams

Montserrat College of Art student Kristine Williams will unveil her mural “Resurrection Theme”, along with other recent drawings and paintings, on Thursday evening, July 29, 2010 at 6:00 pm at First Baptist Church in Beverly. The public is invited to attend, to meet the artist and to enjoy light refreshments.

Kristine Williams is a senior at Montserrat College of Art. Kristine’s mural, done on the theme of the Resurrection, explores the subject through abstraction. The painting plays with movement, darkness that transcends into light, as well as with color, tone, and variation in brush strokes. Painted in acrylics on a wall created especially for the piece, the mural is planned to anchor a gallery space that will host more art over time.

Montserrat’s Summer Study in Italy program is well underway with students and faculty based in Viterbo, Italy, and touring art historical sites, museums, and taking classes in painting, photography, drawing and art history.

Carving Expert Demonstrates

Larry Scanlon of Wenham, renowned bird carver, will be demonstrating his step-by-step techniques for carving, detailing, and final painting of his signature shore bird decoys and song birds at Gallery Della-Piana on Wednesday, July 21 from 6-8 PM. I’m excited and honored to have been the first artist chosen to display my paintings for the newly constructed Mashpee Public Library. The thought of my work being on display in the same room with words of our world’s greatest minds is quite humbling. My “South Cape” and “Marshbirds” series will be showing at the library through July.

Montserrat Recognized as the Epicenter of Encaustic Painting

Boston’s prestigious PBS station WGBH-TV has documented the just-concluded 4th International Encaustic Painting Conference, held at Montserrat College of Art. In a special segment on “Greater Boston with Emily Rooney” show aired Thursday, July 8, the station recognized the college for its first-in-the-nation, Encuastic Conference, directed by Joanne Mattera, which brings an international audience to Montserrat’s Beverly, MA campus.
