Art and beauty aren’t that distant! Anthony Vitale is a past student of Montserrat, as well as a 6th-generation hairstylist! In an interview with Stuff Magazine, he discusses how his art education has helped him realize that creating the perfect hairstyle may not be that far off from sculpting the perfect work of art.

Anthony is the owner and master stylist at Anthony David Salon in Burlington, MA where many of his own paintings are hung throughout his salon.

Does your art education enhance your styling?
Color theory from art school served me very well in hair school. Being an artist, you see different views – how color is in balance with the cut, or how the colors pick up flecks in the skin tone or irises of the eyes. You can see the symmetry of the hair or the texture movement instead of just cutting or coloring for the sake of it. An artistic mind sees the end result before it’s done.

Where’s the overlap between creating art + beautiful hair?
The balance of a great painting and a hairstyle are very similar. It’s all about how you want the eyes viewing it to move around the artwork.

If we want a new generation of leaders and innovators who can be effective in an ever more globalized world, sending our students overseas is not a luxury. It’s a necessity.

I believe that our national security rests upon the foundation of a well-educated electorate with a broad and sophisticated worldview. Ninety-six percent of humanity lives outside our borders — and we risk being left in the dust if we don’t know how to effectively engage the world. It’s critical to deal smartly with the emerging economic and military powers of China and India, and we must better understand the intricacies of Islam. While Germany is increasingly going wind-powered, the Dutch are building up their dikes and Africa is fighting a growing desert, we need policies more insightful than “drill, baby, drill.”

Fear vs. understanding

There’s a lot of fear in our society today. Students who travel learn that fear is for people who don’t get out much. And they learn that the flip side of fear is understanding. Travelers learn to celebrate, rather than fear, the diversity on our planet. Learning in a different culture and place allows us to see our own challenges in sharp contrast, and with more clarity, as we observe smart people in other lands dealing with similar issues.

Agglomeration merges MacNaught and Bufenmeyer’s individuality to create something bigger than themselves as a collaborative experiment to see what combining two different approaches to image making would yield.

McNaught’s work has been focused on formal issues of image making using strategies similar to game playing as building blocks to tap into her creativity. Her tightly planned structures using repetitive pattern, mark making, and shapes result in a complexity that creates a dynamic geometry that takes on a life of its own.
