Montserrat’s student run gallery, the Bear Gallery, and the Beverly Historical Society have collaborated on an exhibit at The Cabot House, on view through March 31. Bear Gallery’s student staff members Grant Archer and Emily Fung, with the Society’s Curator of Collections Darren Brown, and with assistance from Montserrat’s Asst. Curator of Education, Maggie Cavallo, have created this experience to honor the community they both share.

By considering the practice of recording history, and the relationship to the melting pot of downtown Beverly, the students of Montserrat subvert traditional perspectives on Beverly and its extensive past. The exhibition compares and contrasts contemporary art movements with age-old textile practices, maritime art and traditional painting practices, creating a dialogue that speaks directly with the historic objects on display at the Cabot House. After the students had looked through several rooms and storage units of the Society’s Collection, they chose pieces that would inspire the show.

The Bear Gallery invites the Montserrat community to their current drawing show, All Wound Up: In Lines and Shading, featuring drawings by Montserrat students and alumni. Opening Reception: Friday Oct. 14, 4–6 p.m. located in the Student Village’s Lower Level, across from the Hardie Building, Beverly, MA

The Bear Gallery provides a venue for the pursuit of student education in curatorial and gallery skills. The gallery serves to bridge the gap between art students and professional artists, as well as creating a sense of community. Each show presents a student perspective of contemporary work by their peers and those who influence them. The Ursa Major Gallery was created as a way to branch off of the on campus Bear Gallery to extend publicity of student work beyond the campus. The Bear Gallery: A Student-run gallery offering you a chance to prepare to be a professional artist.

The Bear Gallery invites all students and alumni of Montserrat College of Art to participate in an upcoming event held at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate in Ipswich, Massachusetts. The Crane Estate is holding their annual Art Show and the Bear Gallery has been invited to show our fellow students in one of their buildings.

The Bear Gallery is asking for 50+ submissions of work in all mediums that has been inspired by the North Shore. Work must be “gallery-ready” (work should be matted, framed, wired, and ready to be hung on the wall), then dropped off by November 2nd, in the Bear Gallery or in Len Thomas-Vickory’s office.

The work that is submitted will be juried, so not everything will make it into the show, but those pieces that do, will potentially be auctioned off if approved by the artist. 75% of the profit will go to the artist and 25 % will go to supporting the Crane Estate, this is very generous and a great opportunity to show a professionalized product, take advantage of it. For further information or any questions please feel free to contact Michelle Shugrue (860-912-9469) or Justin Anderson (860-961-5798).
