Susan Calhoun’s Practicum in the DR

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Nurse Susan Calhoun will be going to the Dominican Republic, from Jan. 7-21, 2012, to provide health care to rural villagers as a practicum experience for her Masters of Nursing degree at Salem State University. Susan will be working with the organization Intercultural Nursing, Inc., based in Rhode Island. She will be treating 100 patients a day in each clinic, while supervising several University of Rhode Island undergraduate nursing students. Susan is paying for her own airfare and accommodations while in the DR. However, each volunteer is asked to bring one large duffel bag with supplies. She is asking for donations of the following supplies:

Needed items: bar soap, toothpaste, tooth brushes, sandwich paper bags, small zip lock plastic bags, inexpensive hats with visors (can be gently used), white socks, razors, reading glasses, sunglasses, sewing kits, multivitamins, and antacid tablets.

In addition, donations also can be made to Susan so she can buy over the counter medications in bulk, or to “INI” and the Nurse Practitioner will use $$ to purchase antibiotics and other supplies for our clinic. All donations are tax deductible and receipts will be issued from INI. She will be accepting donations in person each Mon-Fri from 9am-2pm, and there will be a box outside the Health Center for donations to be dropped off when she is not here. Susan appreciates anything you can share!

A Generous Ford Truck Donation

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

A gently used Ford truck was donated by the Tom Carpi family of Lynnfield to Montserrat for use by the facilities department. The donation was facilitated by a meeting with President Steve Immerman and Richard Moore of Eastern Bank, whose family was the former owners of the land on which the college now sits, the Corning family. Mr. Carpi said he was happy to help out the college by donating a truck to save the college the expense of purchasing a new vehicle. President Immerman thanked the Carpi family noting that it was an incredibly generous donation.

Founding faculty members Roger Martin, left, and Ollie Balf, right, flank Montserrat President Steve Immerman during a meeting at the college last week. The two founders came to meet the new president and each donated a piece of their art to the upcoming Artrageous!24 benefit art auction, which will be held May 1. Both men live on Cape Ann and still continue to paint and create art.

We’re happy to announce that Montserrat College of Art is the recipient of a $1000 grant from CinemaSalem that will go towards student scholarship. CinemaSalem gives grants to innovative and effective nonprofit organizations, funded by a $.25 contribution from each movie admission ticket they sell each month, up to $1000. In their announcement, CinemaSalem notes that Montserrat “enriches the cultural life of the North Shore by providing an intensive visual arts education to its students and a continuing array of public exhibitions, art talks, and master classes to the public. Montserrat has supplied CinemaSalem with excellent employees, art for our lobby gallery, and professors to collaborate on the Salem Film Fest.” A special thanks to Ethan Berry for building the strong relationship we now have with CinemaSalem.
