Each of the artists in this exhibition uses data as a source to define the visual outcome of the pieces. Random Access explores the stories that are revealed as data becomes visualized as works of art. Joelle Dietrick mixes data regarding foreclosed homes and Sherwin-Williams 2007 Color Forecast paints. Reese Inman uses mapping source imagery of an existing space and remixes it with the visual surface of another to create a visualization of the space between them. George Legrady focuses on aesthetic research through integrating data mapping, data visualization and self-organizing algorithms into interactive art installations. Nathalie Miebach translates scientific data related to astronomy, ecology and meteorology into woven sculptures. Casey Reas illustrates the forms, behaviors, and elements that are the foundation of software that combines drawing with generative processes to explore a network.

The exhibit is sponsored exclusively by Relevant Data Corp. “Everyone at Relevant Data Corp. is proud to support a local institution like Montserrat College of Art,” said Marshall Sterman, Chairman and CEO of Relevant Data Corp. “In today’s creative economy – more visual than ever before – the ability to ‘mine data’ and make it come alive is increasingly important. Our goal of making real-time analytics available to business and industry ties in perfectly with the participating artists’ use of data as art.”

Congratulations to Gallery Director Leonie Bradbury for being recognized (again!) for Montserrat College of Art’s spring 2011 exhibit Debt to Pleasure. The exhibit was featured in The Boston Globe’s list of “Top Gallery Exhibits in 2011.”

“For unadulterated visual luxury, nothing beat A Debt to Pleasure, a ravishing yet unsettling show organized at Montserrat College of Art Gallery by gallery director Leonie Bradbury,” said Cate McQuaid from The Boston Globe. “Artists played off the hallucinatory beauty evoked in allegorical strains of art history, from 17th-century Dutch painting to 19th-century American folk art. Set together in a contemporary gallery, these works evoked a heightened sense of time’s gulf, and how we shape history to fit our present-day needs.”

Sculpture Instructor Elizabeth Alexander gave an artist talk about her current Home Sweet Home exhibit at the Montserrat Gallery, on view through Jan. 21. She discussed what it was like growing up as a welder’s daughter, her struggle to always prove herself, her obsession for perfection, and more. She gave insight into how her art has progressed over the years and how the Victorian age has inspired her to transform welding tools and equipment into decorative and desirable objects. Elizabeth even discussed how she took a red Firebird that she found in a junkyard and turned it into a “Victorian chariot”. She aims to marry the blue collar world with the world of luxury.

Read more about Elizabeth’s Artist Talk on The New England Journal of Aesthetic Research

Home Sweet Home features site-specific installations by three New England artists: Elizabeth Alexander, Samantha Fields, and Kirsten Reynolds. Each artist explores the interior and exterior boundaries of ‘the home’ within both an architectural and feminist context. Together they provide a critique of the cultural power structure that is the domestic sphere. Each artist engages specifically with the walls, both exterior and interior, as the primary signifier of the home.

hear.feel.fear represents collage in all forms and media.

17 Cox is proud to host the audio/visual presentations of Plastic Color//Math Magic and Nickolas Peter followed by a film screening of the cult classic Suspiria. In conjunction with ‘Continuity’, collage works by Kylie Alexander in the 17 Cox exhibition space, inspired by and appropriating film stills from Suspiria (1977), hear.feel.fear engenders the idea of collage to all forms of cut and paste media; not just 2D collage, but film, turntables, and other devices/methods that arrange prefabricated media samples like sound bites, film stills, track cuts, et al. into larger compositions.

hear.feel.fear will be introduced by alumnus Bradford Rusick ’08 and Prof. Ethan Berry. 17 Cox is directed by Montserrat Gallery’s Exhibitions Manager, Lucas Spivey

Saturday, Dec. 3rd, 2011 6 – 9pm

Suggested donation : $5
Lucas says no one will be turned away and all proceeds go directly to artists and residency programs

Take a look at Montserrat Galleries’ incredible array of innovative exhibitions of contemporary art that feature regional, national and international artists, ranging from emerging to established! Through creative and pragmatic programming, the galleries have been dramatically augmenting the academic learning environment of Montserrat College of Art. By celebrating artistic excellence, their goal is to cultivate an understanding of the culture and current trends in the art world, celebrate artistic excellence, and inspire a lifelong involvement in art and design.

At the heart of Montserrat Galleries is a drive to support students and give them the tools and inspiration to become successful professional artists. Through exhibitions and programming, Montserrat Galleries have truly redefined what it means to be a Teaching Gallery. Every year 40 or more artists and arts professionals are invited to campus to conduct classroom visits, collaborative projects, critiques, and formal presentations that are intentionally designed to satisfy the learning outcomes of our students and faculty.
